Poulsbo’s Anthony Poggi is off to the races

Soap-box racing champion Anthony Poggi is returning to Akron, Ohio for a shot at the 2012 All-American Soap Box Derby Super Stock title July 21.

POULSBO — Soap-box racing champion Anthony Poggi is returning to Akron, Ohio for a shot at the 2012 All-American Soap Box Derby Super Stock title July 21.

Anthony, 11, won the Super Stock Division during the Kitsap Soap Box Derby’s local championship June 3. The Breidablik Elementary School student will make his third trip to Akron.

Also headed to the championship is Bryanna Barry of Bremerton. Bryanna, 10, won the Stock Division.

The All-American derby is in its 75th year. The derby features more than 500 qualifiers from the United States and a few outside countries. Racers compete in either Stock, Super Stock, Masters or Ultimate Speed divisions. Participants become eligible by competing in local championships.

Racers will compete for a share of $45,000 in college scholarships. First-place finishers at the derby in each division receive a $5,000 Goodyear Champion’s Scholarship.

In 2010, Anthony won Kitsap’s first trophy at the 73rd All-American Derby. He crossed the finish line at No. 8 out of 125 in the Stock Division.
