KINGSTON — Bobby Reece is still in a wait-and-see mode regarding his former position as a multi-sport coach in the North Kitsap School District.

Reece recently appealed the district’s decision to not renew his coaching contracts at the end of the winter season.

Reece said it is in his best interest to limit the amount of information he gives out.

“I have one shot to win,” Reece said of the appeal decision.

In a statement he prepared for the district, Reece said his contracts for head wrestling coach at Kingston middle and high schools and football coach at Kingston Middle School were not renewed.

A coach in the North Kitsap School District always has the right to appeal a decision, assistant superintendent Chris Willits said. Whether a decision to not renew a coach’s contract is overturned depends on the circumstances.

Coaching contracts are either renewed, or not, at the end of each season.

Under the collective bargaining agreement between the North Kitsap Athletics and Activities Alliance and district, Reece has the right to appeal the decision.

If a contract is not renewed because of performance, there’s a chance for the appeal to go through. If a contract is not renewed because of conduct, however, Willits said that would not be appealable.

“[Reece[ has the right, like any [alliance] member has, to challenge,” Willits said. “The question is what is being challenged and would it qualify.” Willits would not comment on whether Reece’s appeal qualifies.

Patrick Olsen, the district’s athletic director, would not comment on the district’s decision. He did say that, in general, school districts try to get “the absolute best to try and run the program that each of the schools want.”

“I know stability is a good thing,” Olsen said. “But at the same time, I know [of] school districts that have canceled all the stipends to mix it up a little.”

If a coach is not rehired at the end of the season, he or she can still apply again as long as the non-renewal doesn’t have to do with misconduct, Willits said. Hiring a coach, or volunteer must be in everyone’s best interest, he said.

Reece was put on suspension during the winter season following a confrontation with wrestling referee Chuck Bullard. “I, Coach Reece, first want to apologize to my team, family, wrestling family, Chuck Bullard, Kingston High School, and North Kitsap School District as this has affected us all,” Reece’s statement to the district said.

“I also want to thank all KMS and KHS staff, students and parents for helping my family and I build such a great wrestling program who come together as family we can all be proud of for years to come!!”

Reece has coached high school wrestling for six years and middle school wrestling for eight. He was hired as the Kingston Middle School football coach in 2012.

Reece began coaching about 10 years ago at the middle school, when it was still a junior high.
