Road to Olympic League volleyball title goes through North Kitsap

POULSBO — The road to the Olympic League volleyball title likely still runs through Poulsbo.

North Kitsap’s Vikings remained undefeated in league play and overall after a 3-0 sweep of Sequim’s Wolves on Sept. 21.

“North has a very good team,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said, after her squad fell 25-19, 25-14 and 25-18.

“All their players play club together so they are playing year-round compared to our three varsity players (who) play club.”

Brittany Gale and Kalli Wiker had nine assists each in the loss. Arlene Law paced the offense with eight kills and added five blocks, and Isabelle Dennis chipped in with 16 digs. Tayler Breckenridge had five kills.

“Our goal is to win a game off of them next time because they haven’t even lost one game in a match,” Webber Heilman said.

Sequim hosts North Kitsap on Oct. 17.

Two days prior, Sequim out-lasted a North Mason squad bent on slowing down the match’s pace. The Wolves pulled out a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) home win on Sept. 19.

“The match was very slow, offensive-wise,” Webber Heilman said. “We finally picked up the pace in the third game with a stronger win.”

The Olympic Trojans defeated the Wolves 100-70 on Sept. 21 at the YMCA of Sequim. It was the third year in a row the Trojans won head-to-head. However, Sonja Govertsen helped lead the Wolves by qualifying for state in the 100 free (57.73). She previously qualified for state in the 50 free and two relays this season.

She and Sydnee Linnane, Jasmine Itti and Sydney Swanson also cut 1 second from their 200 medley time (2:01.22), which is also heading to state.
