Rosenberg hired as NKHS boys basketball coach

Dan Rosenberg would like to develop North Kitsap High School boys basketball from the ground up, starting at the elementary level.

POULSBO — Dan Rosenberg would like to develop North Kitsap High School boys basketball from the ground up, starting at the elementary level.

Rosenberg, 44, was hired recently as the new varsity head coach.

“North Kitsap has some potential,” Rosenberg said. “There is a very supportive community and good programs … It reminds me of where I grew up.”

Rosenberg replaces Tony Chisholm, who resigned as head coach March 1. The reason for Chisholm’s resignation is not known. Chisholm coached in the North Kitsap School District for about 22 years.

Rosenberg grew up just outside Pittsburgh, Pa., in Beaver Falls. He’s held numerous coaching jobs, beginning in 1989. He played basketball until seventh grade.

Rosenberg worked for former Blackhawk coach John Miller as a student-coach. John Miller is the father of Sean and Archie Miller. Sean Miller is coach of the University of Arizona’s men’s team. Archie Miller is coach at University of Dayton; Archie Miller was one of Rosenberg’s players.

Rosenberg moved to Orlando, Fla., then to New Orleans, La., then to Los Angeles. He moved to Bainbridge Island in 2009 with his wife and son.

Rosenberg has held 10 positions, including eight coaching positions at camps or with teams.

After moving to Bainbridge Island, Rosenberg was ready to resume his coaching career. He attended a few North Kitsap and Bainbridge basketball games. If he got back to coaching, he wanted it to be one of those two teams, he said.

Using what he’s learned from the past, Rosenberg wants to establish an elementary school basketball program, which will help build talented players through middle school and into high school. He wants to “get everyone on the same page.”

“We’re only as good as our weakest player,” he said.

Rosenberg met with parents and players April 23. He wants to encourage possible players to workout and practice over the summer, even if it’s on their own time. He will hold summer camps as well.

The North Kitsap varsity team has had its ups-and-downs. The team’s most recent appearance at State was in 2009 with Chisholm. Before that, 2005.

Outside of coaching, Rosenberg is CEO of CashForCars.com and 1-800-carbuyer. He can adjust his schedules as needed, which will allow him to be where he needs to with the Vikings.

Before being CEO, Rosenberg hosted a radio show and toured as a comedian. He performed standup comedy while he was in Los Angeles, but with a family, that became more difficult.

However, comedy may not be completely out the window. Rosenberg expects his ability to joke may help when it comes to referees.

“You attract more flies with sugar, than vinegar,” he said.
