Maybe she left state empty-handed, but after going undefeated (9-0) in regular season doubles action then qualifying for state as a singles player, Bremerton’s Sandy Schmidt has plenty to smile about.
Schmidt hit the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires 3A Girls Tennis Tournament at the Tri-Cities Court Club in Kennewick with the odds stacked against her, having little singles experience and in a juggernaut bracket with the likes of Christina Le (Union) and Brittney Reed (Kamiakin), the eventual state champion.
In opening round action Schmidt battled Shorecrest’s Alena Owen, falling in consecutive sets 7-5, 6-1 into the consolation bracket.
Squaring off against Grace Porter of Bainbridge in consolation action, Schmidt came up short as Porter prevailed 6-2, 6-4.
