South Kitsap High School graduate Jason Hammel signed a two-year, $7.75 million contract with the Colorado Rockies late last week, according to several media outlets.
The 6-foot-6 right-handed pitcher had a 10-9 record with a 4.81 ERA in 30 starts last season. Hammel, 28, also pitched 28 1/3 scoreless innings in 2010, which is the third longest in franchise history.
Since being acquired by the Rockies from Tampa Bay for minor-league pitcher Aneury Rodriguez on April 5, 2009, Hammel has been a regular in Colorado’s starting rotation. He has pitched in 64 games — 60 starts — and has compiled a 20-17 record and a 4.57 ERA in 354 1/3 innings for the Rockies.
Hammel struggled late last season as he compiled a 7.28 ERA in six September starts. He told MLB.com that cholesterol medicine might have contributed to muscle pain in his arm. Hammel, whose father, William Hammel III, died of a heart attack three days after Christmas in 1999, said he since has weaned himself off Crestor.
South Kitsap junior Nars Martinez helped the Wolves end a five-game losing streak with 23 points last week in a win against Shelton.
But the Wolves (4-11 overall, 2-7 league) could not earn their first two-game winning streak of the year Monday as they lost, 62-39, at Gig Harbor. Martinez also scored a team-high 12 points against the Tides (8-7, 5-4).
South’s win against Shelton (4-11, 2-7) was its first since it defeated Oak Harbor 55-47 on Dec. 29 at Bellevue College.
