Consider the first step in the plan accomplished.
Drew Polley, a 2004 South Kitsap High School graduate, finished 16th during Monday’s Boston Marathon in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 36 seconds.
Polley, 24, now is qualified to compete in the U.S. Olympic men’s marathon trials in January 2012 in Houston, where he hopes to gain entry to the Olympics that year in London.
A former cross country and distance runner during his collegiate career at Washington State University, Polley now trains with Hanson-Brooks Distance Project, a group based in Rochester Hills, Mich., that aims to develop young American runners.
Polley was the fifth-fastest American in the race, which was won by Kenya’s Robert Kiprona Cheruiyot in 2:05.52, which beat the course record by 82 seconds.
In addition to Polley, a pair of teachers in the South Kitsap School District also competed in the race. Olalla Elementary School teacher Courtney Willson finished in 3:41.52, while South Kitsap High American Sign Language instructor Lori Moriarity ran the course in 3:54.44.
