PORT ORCHARD — The South Kitsap bowling team capped off an excellent regular season Jan. 15, knocking off previously undefeated Puyallup 2067-1947 to tie them atop the South Puget Sound League standings.

It wasn’t immediately known whether the two teams would share the regular season league championship or if it is to be decided by a tiebreaker. But either way, the Wolves still earned an 11-1 mark in the SPSL, losing only in their previous matchup against the Vikings.

The contest was originally scheduled for Dec. 18, the day an EF-2 tornado touched down approximately 1.5 miles down the road from Hi Joy Bowl.

South Kitsap held the lead pretty much wire-to-wire, thanks to some excellent individual performances. Senior Erin Alonzo set the pace with a 200 in the first game and Abigail Kay followed closely behind with a score of 194. In game two, Kay upped her score to 214 with six strikes and three spares and Jazmin Lamoureux rolled a 191, also throwing six strikes. Abigail Rogers stepped into the second position in game two and came up big with a score of 175.

The Wolves needed all of those totals as they had just a 29-pin lead through the first two games. But during the Baker games — in which a bowling team sends each of its members to bowl a frame — they soared ahead with a 208 and a 221, ending up with a 120-pin margin.

Shylene Tudela bowled four strikes in four attempts. Kay was in the anchor position and threw spares and strikes on all but her last shot.

“That’s the first time all year that they’ve strung two 200 games back-to-back in bakers,” head coach Lee LaDeaux said. “Like I just said to them, it’ll be Baker games, if we keep going forward, that will help us pull it out.”

A top-four finish would send the Wolves on to the West Central District tournament Jan. 26. The top three 4A teams from districts would then go to state on Feb. 1 at Narrows Plaza in Tacoma.

Kay is the only member of this year’s team to bowl at state last season, but LaDeaux believes his team has the ability to get there as a group.

“I think we have several individuals that would make it, but I’d like to see them as a team go through,” LaDeaux said. “It’s a better bonding experience and they’ll enjoy it more. Three of them on the team right now are seniors and I’d like to see them go to state together.”
