Central Kitsap was eliminated from the girls soccer playoffs Monday, losing to Gig Harbor in a shootout (3-1), but Klahowya and Olympic are still alive.
The Lady Eagles (9-5-1) face Steilacoom (13-3-0) today at Franklin Pierce High School in the Class 2A West Central District tournament. The teams tied 1-1 in an early season match.
“We had a week and a half off, so the girls are ready to get back at it,” coach Troy Oelschlager said.
Olympic, which beat Capital 3-0 Tuesday to secure the No. 1 seed, faces Hazen (8-7-1) in the Class 3A West Central/Southwest District tournament at 3 p.m. today at South Sound Stadium in Lacey.
Ali Brown (9th minute), Monica Lopez (42nd) and Audrey Pond (78th) tallied scores against Capital to give the Lady Trojans the victory.
“It was a good one,” coach Steve Haggerty said of the win. “We played very well defensively.”
With Brown scoring in the 9th minute, Olympic turned to goalkeeper Darrien Dorr, who posted her 13th shutout on the season.
“We told the kids in the locker room to establish a rhythm and try to get up early,” Haggerty said. “Darrien and the back line did a good job and got it done.”
The Trojans are looking to get back to the state tournament for the second consecutive year and Haggerty believes the No. 1 district seed gives the team a good chance to do so.
“I like our chances much better now,” he said.
Central Kitsap lost for the second consecutive year, in heartbreaking fashion, to end the season. The Lady Cougars played Gig Harbor to a 0-0 tie through regulation and two overtime periods in windy, rainy conditions. But only CK junior Hannah Anderson managed to score in the shootout, while Gig Harbor scored three goals to secure the victory.
“It’s just tough to have it end that way in soccer, but those are the rules,” coach Vicky Webb said. “You can’t fault the girls for their effort.”
The miserable weather didn’t help either team, as Webb guessed CK managed only four shots on goal.
“The weather definitely played a factor,” Webb said. “Wherever you kicked the ball, it just came back down at you.”
Webb is optimistic for the 2009 season, however, with her team returning all but three players — Allie Washburn, Rebekah Kitchen and Katie Romas, all of whom graduate.
“We win and lose as a team,” Webb said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the girls.”
