There was no need for razzle-dazzle.

Not in a road game against a Tyee squad that only suited up eight players — some from junior varsity — because several of its regulars were academically ineligible.

South Kitsap simply stuck to fundaments on the offensive end in a 90-59 nonleague win Monday against the Totems.

The Wolves (2-0) frequently made an extra pass or two to find an open player and aggressively worked the key to draw fouls against an undersized Tyee lineup. The result was an offense that had little difficulty finding its rhythm.

About the only problem for South, which opens Narrows League play at 7 p.m. Friday against Shelton, came on the defensive end. The Totems (0-1), who play in the Class 3A Seamount League, had a couple of one-point leads in the first quarter, but could not shoot well enough to sustain them.

Without much depth or an interior presence, Tyee relied on the outside shooting of Trey Soajimc, who made a pair of 3-pointers en route to 16 points. But the Totems only hit 10 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc.

South coach John Callaghan felt his team defended well in its man-to-man defense, but struggled when they switched to a zone scheme.

“They had pretty good looks on a lot of those,” he said. “When we zone, our pressure wasn’t very good.”

The Wolves led 21-16 entering the second period and the game never was any closer. They extended their lead to 44-25 at halftime.

Behind guard Nars Martinez, who had a game-high 17 points, the Wolves had four players score in double figures. The others were Cedric Brown (11), Isaiah Davis (10) and Leon La Deaux (11). South converted 54 percent of its shots, while Tyee hit 38 percent.

“Both games we’ve been aggressive in attacking the basket,” Callaghan said. “We’re not settling for jumpers, but when we’re open we’re taking them.”

Martinez, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, personified South’s effort on the offensive end. He converted 7 of 9 field goals and all three of his free throws by frequently cutting toward the basket and drawing contact.

“He’s crafty,” Callaghan said. “He drives in there, but he’s not out of control at all. If he sees a crack in there, he’s getting to it.”

The Wolves made 24 of 29 free throws, while Nick Hawthorne was successful on the Totems’ only attempt.

Martinez and the other starters departed late in the third quarter as South built a 67-44 advantage into the final period. All 12 players listed on the roster saw time and all but one scored. Callaghan said he hopes that will help his team build confidence as the competition becomes stiffer.

“We’re going to need to play some tougher opponents, which we will,” he said. “It’s a good way to start.”

Callaghan cannot believe his team already is starting Narrows League play after just two games. South resumes its nonleague schedule Dec. 28-30 at the Les Schwab Christmas Classic at Bellevue Community College.

“It’s a sprint to Christmas break,” Callaghan said. “Shelton will be a good game. They usually have pretty tough kids.”
