The mistakes of the Wolves piled up against the Sumner Spartans, as South Kitsap’s boys soccer team was dominated 9-1 April 7 in Port Orchard.
SK (2-5, 0-1) entered the match losing two in a row, falling to the Bonney Lake Panthers 5-0 April 3 and the Emerald Ridge Jaguars 4-0 April 1. The Wolves are still searching for their first home win of the season.
“They’re [South Kitsap] still working hard, they’re still trying,” SK coach Bill Conley said. “Every guy that steps on this field is giving their best.”
Both teams spent the first 15 minutes of the match feeling each other out, with Sumner procuring a majority of the offensive possessions.
Goalkeeper Cole Meyers fielded many shots on goal from the Spartans as the ball was mostly in SK territory. But he couldn’t stop them all, letting up a goal at the 22:25 mark, giving Sumner a 1-0 lead.
SK struggled to get the ball out of its own territory for a majority of the half, only tallying three consistent forays into Sumner territory by the 15-minute mark in the first half.
Sumner punched an additional two goals in off corner kicks in the last ten minutes of the half and an additional goal with two minutes remaining, giving them a six-goal lead entering halftime.
“I mean, we were playing really nicely the first fifteen minutes of the game,” Conley said. “Once we start making mistakes, they just kind of pile up and pile up.”
The SK defense successfully prevented Sumner from attempting many shots on goal to start the second half. But Sumner scored another goal at the 27-minute mark to give the Spartans a seven-goal lead.
Meyers let another goal in with 22 minutes remaining in the match. Not even two minutes later, Sumner managed to punch in another goal.
SK midfielder Caden Castellani was able to put in a goal for the Wolves late in the match.
“Despite the unfortunate score, I feel like the boys worked hard,” goalkeeper Isaac Nyugen said. “Some heads were dropped, but at the end of the day, we’re just trying to have fun.”
