South Kitsap places 12 on SPSL All-League teams

Six players were named to the first team

PORT ORCHARD — Twelve South Kitsap baseball players have made the cut for the 4A SPSL All-League team, as voted upon by the league’s coaches.

Headlining the list are six first-teamers: seniors Jason Sauer and Torre DiGiovanni, junior Jacob Duarte and seniors Dusty Garcia, Alex Garcia and Nate Wotzka.

Sauer, who was initially slated for a relief role (he picked up two saves over the course of the season), also made several starts, including a complete-game, three-hit victory over Puyallup that snapped that team’s 41-game winning streak. Sauer racked up a 4-1 record with a 1.20 ERA. He struck out 29 batters in 40 2/3 innings.

Alex Garcia led South Kitsap with a .338 batting average and drove in 12 runs. While his bat was valuable, his work behind the plate as the guide to the pitching staff was even more impressive. Dusty Garcia, the speedy leadoff hitter and centerfielder, hit .273 and swiped nine bases. DiGiovanni often served as the cleanup hitter and batted .311 with a home run and 18 RBI.

Second-team players included seniors Garrison Glisson and Drew Worden. Both players missed some time this year but made key contributions during the season. The Gonzaga-bound Worden hit .310 with a home run and 19 RBI. Glisson struck out 35 hitters in 38 2/3 innings on his way to a 5-1 record with a 0.72 ERA.
