After last week’s controversy, there was no dispute this time.

South Kitsap already had a two-touchdown lead before Franklin Pierce even saw the ball in Friday’s 48-7 nonleague win at Joe Knowles Field.

The Wolves (2-1) opened with a nine-play drive that culminated in Sean Allison carrying for a 1-yard touchdown run.

South then recovered an onside kick and needed just three plays to score when junior quarterback Gordy Anderson found Jared Moore, who broke a tackle attempt by linebacker Rheinheart Siose and scored a 30-yard touchdown.

That gave the Wolves a 14-0 lead with 7:27 left in the first quarter.

It was more points than the Wolves scored in their 14-13 loss at Central Kitsap a week earlier when South’s coaching staff decided not to take a timeout with 22 seconds and the clock running.

Anderson took the snap with 10 seconds left, his pass into the end zone fell incomplete, and the game ended.

“I told the kids after last week they did everything we asked them to do,” South coach D.J. Sigurdson said. “They really did. They’re pretty resilient.”

Sigurdson said “that one stings” himself and the coaching staff, but that this win might also be remembered for a different reason.

It gave the 12th-year coach an 85-33 record at South, which moves him into second place on the school’s career wins list.

He passed Stener Kvinsland, who guided the Wolves to a 84-47-5 record from 1941-57. Ed Fisher (1974-96) has the program’s top mark at 196-49.

The Wolves also hope the outcome is similar to last year’s. South started the 2007 season at 1-2, but won five consecutive games to help advance to the state playoffs for the first time in five years.

Anderson said Sigurdson’s motto is that what happens after adversity shows a team’s fortitude.

And its offense looked as dynamic as ever against the Cardinals (1-2), who play in the South Puget Sound League 3A. The Wolves amassed 450 yards of total offense, and two different quarterbacks threw touchdown passes in the second quarter.

Senior Bryan Dorsey, who was supposed to start this season until he tore meniscus in his right knee last month, made his first appearance of the season on the opening drive of the second quarter, and led the Wolves on a 10-play drive that culminated with a 4-yard touchdown pass to junior Leon La Deaux, who finished with 83 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions.

Anderson, who completed seven of 10 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns, returned on the next drive and connected with sophomore Isaiah Davis on a 20-yard touchdown to finish a five-play drive.

That gave South, which scored on four of six first-half possessions, a 28-0 lead at halftime.

The Wolves scored again on their first possession of the second half when Anderson found La Deaux for a 43-yard touchdown and extended their lead to 38-0 at the end of the third quarter when Drew Klopfstein hit a 26-yard field goal.

Klopfstein made a 34-yard field goal to increase the lead to 41-0 before Franklin Pierce quarterback Brooks Roy scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 6:02 left to prevent the shutout.

Zach Cruz finished the scoring when the Wolves’ junior ran for a 43-yard touchdown.

The Cardinals produced 234 yards of total offense, but 81 of their 122 rushing yards came on two plays.

“We really focused on yards after the catch,” Sigurdson said. “There were a few plays they made in the second half, but I was really happy with how they rallied around the ball.”

It was the only nonleague game of the regular season for the Wolves, who return to Narrows League play at 7 p.m. Friday against rival Gig Harbor at Joe Knowles Field. The Tides improved their record to 2-1 with a 31-7 win Friday against Central at Silverdale Stadium.

“Big game,” Sigurdson said. “Big rival. It’s nice to have them at our place.”
