Most of South Kitsap’s top talent is seniors.

Which means there is little drama when it comes to playoff swim meets.

Seniors Brandon Dravis and Taylor Rousell will compete at the West Central District meet today and Saturday at Rogers High School even though both already have achieved state-qualifying times in multiple events.

Dravis placed first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 2.51 seconds and second in the 100 backstroke in 55.95 seconds during Friday’s league meet at Foss High School. Gig Harbor junior Dakota Moist won the latter event in 55.37 seconds.

“I got touched out in the 100 backstroke by my rival,” Dravis said. “That was pretty disappointing. But I felt good about 200 individual medley.”

Rousell, who was battling an illness at the league meet, slipped to fifth place in the 50 freestyle in 23.04 seconds. He later won the 100 butterfly in 55.36 seconds.

South coach Tami Lester-Dame credited Rousell for competing hard through the illness and responding with the victory after his “disappointing swim” in the 50 freestyle. She said Rousell and the rest of the team are healthy now.

Another strength for the Wolves appears to be their diving depth. Junior Joe Rose, who competed at state a year ago, easily won the league meet with 269.25 points — more than 30 better than his closest competitor. Junior Kelvin Waterman placed third (145.55) and senior Cole Nelson also will advanced to districts because he achieved a qualifying score earlier in the season.

“A lot of the tougher kids graduated last year,” said Lester-Dame, referring to the divers. “Hopefully they’ll give us a good head start.”

While the divers accomplished that at the league meet, many of the swimmers did not continue it as South finished fifth among 10 competing teams with 167 points. Gig Harbor won the meet with 262 points.

The Wolves already had a district-qualifying time in the 400 freestyle relay, so Lester-Dame elected to send an alternate team, which was disqualified. Both the 200 freestyle and medley relay teams placed fourth. Lester-Dame said the group’s 1:46.08 time in the 200 freestyle was its slowest of the season.

Senior Justin Slezak placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.61. He competed at state in that event last year.

“It was kind of a disappointing finish for Justin,” Lester-Dame said.

She noted that some of her swimmers are tired at this point in the season. But after districts, where the top six placers in each event qualify for state, there will be a week off before the Feb. 19-20 Class 4A state meet. Lester-Dame said the extra rest allowed her to taper swimmers this week.
