Freshman Nicole Hinely was dominant throughout the regular season and that didn’t stop Friday at the Narrows League swimming and diving championships.

Hinely won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.25 seconds and followed with a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1 minute, 0.48 seconds to win both events for South Kitsap at Foss High School.

“We’re getting shades of Madison Rousell,” said South coach Dennis Anderson, referring to South’s former four-time state champion who now swims at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. “They’re buddies, so that kind of fires her (Hinely) up.”

Hinely advanced along with five other competitors from South to the West Central District meet Friday and Saturday at Rogers High School.

Anderson said he expects Hinely to advance to the Nov. 13-15 state meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

“I think we’re only seeing the very beginning,” he said. “There’s so much upside for her.”

Hinely was the Wolves’ only first-place finisher, but Anderson was happy with the other five district qualifiers. Sophomore Angela Pearson finished fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:27.24 to advance to districts.

“She had a great meet,” Anderson said. “She’s really starting to pick up her tempo and stroke. I told her to keep the pressure up and the results showed.”

Fellow sophomore Kelsey Bagley was dubbed South’s co-MVP of the meet by Anderson.

She finished seventh in the 100 freestyle in 58.58 seconds and ninth in the 50 freestyle in 27.01 seconds to qualify for districts.

He noted that Bagley is the only district qualifier who doesn’t swim year round.

“She’s got a ton of talent,” he said. “She’s knocking on the door for a state time.”

The Wolves’ group of sophomores are the deepest on the squad and that was reflected in the district berths.

Four sophomores advanced, including Ashlee Becker and Cierra Sharp. Becker finished seventh in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.96.

“She had a little bit of a rough time, but I was impressed with her because she came back and rallied in the relays,” Anderson said. “I totally applaud her because she came back in those relays and did a great job. It shows great character.”

Sharp advanced in the same event when she finished eighth in 1:07.8. It was a personal-best time for her.

“She’s such a hard worker,” Anderson said. “It’s inevitable that she will succeed.”

The only non-sophomore to advance besides Hinely was junior Rachel Wester.

She finished 10th in the 50 freestyle in 27.39 seconds.

Anderson also plans to bring Johanna Steinbrink and Hannah Straavaldson to districts as alternates.

• Wolves continue to roll with big win over Foss: South Kitsap’s volleyball team won its fourth straight Narrows League match with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-11 win Thursday against Foss.

Karinne Nelson had 12 kills and Angel Sheldon added seven more for the Wolves. Cortney Ecternach added 24 assists and six aces, while Sarah Voigt had five digs for South (7-6 overall, 5-4 league).
