No South Kitsap High School team or individual won a state championship in 2010, but there were some notable runner-ups. Here is a monthly review of how the school, and some of its graduates, fared during the past year.
January
• 1: South Kitsap athletic director Ed Santos announces that the Narrows will become a multi-classification league for the first time. South is joined in the 4A division by Bellarmine Prep, Central Kitsap, Gig Harbor, Mount Tahoma, Olympia, Shelton and Stadium.
• 2: Conner Hartmann finished second at 171 pounds, while teammates Terrill Wilson (fourth, 119) and Cody Barich (fifth, 135) also placed for South Kitsap at the Pacific Coast Tournament in Vancouver, Wash.
• 19: Kitsap Pumas assistant James Ritchie is named boys soccer coach at South Kitsap. Ritchie, who replaced Michael Krug, continued his duties with the Pumas in addition to becoming coach at Olympic College.
• 29: Evan Atwater, a 2006 South Kitsap graduate, became the 34th player in the history of George Fox University, which is located in Newberg, Ore., to score 1,000 points during his career. Atwater reached that mark with 17 minutes, 27 seconds left in the first half. Atwater scored 10 points to help the Bruins to a 87-75 win at Puget Sound.
February
• 3: South Kitsap junior Angela Romonsky converted six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points to lead the Wolves to a 55-44 win against Gig Harbor in their regular-season finale. It was the fifth consecutive win for South, which previously clinched its first Narrows League Bridge Division title since 2000-01.
• 3: Christina Boddie (women’s soccer, University of Idaho), Robert Issa (football, Waldorf College in Iowa), Leon La Deaux (football, Central Washington), Brittany Stepper (volleyball, Green River Community College) and Nico de la Cruz (men’s soccer, Seattle University) partake in National Letter of Intent Day festivities at South Kitsap.
• 6: South Kitsap finished with 393.5 points — 100 better than second-place Central Kitsap — to win the 11-team sub-regional wrestling tournament for a ninth consecutive year at Foss High School. Wilson (119 pounds), Barich (135), Kris Fenton (140), Taylor Lyman (145), Craig Dyess (160), Hartmann (171) and Tom Decker (285) all won championships for the Wolves.
• 13: The Wolves earned their second consecutive Class 4A Region III title at Central Kitsap High School. Barich (135), Dyess (160) and Hartmann (171) won titles for South Kitsap.
• 20: Senior Molly Werder scored 14 points, but it was not enough to avoid a season-ending loss, 55-44, against Bethel in the West Central District Tournament at Foss High School. The Wolves finished with a 17-8 record.
• 20: Auburn’s Dylan Rutledge earned a 5-2 decision against Hartmann in the championship match at 171 pounds during Mat Classic XXII at the Tacoma Dome. Hartmann was the highest placer for the Wolves, who finished 11th with 53 points.
• 20: South Kitsap senior Taylor Rousell finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.97 seconds during the Class 4A state swim and dive championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Shorewood’s Thor Stenfjord won the event in 47.69. Rousell also finished fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.96), while classmate Brandon Dravis was sixth in the 200 individual medley (1:58.67). The Wolves placed 11th with 98 points.
March
• 30: South Kitsap senior Chloe Helms won a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Bellarmine Prep’s Emily Carter in the No. 2 singles, but it was not enough as the Lions won four of the five matches.
April
• 13: Senior Austin Arper scored three goals to lead South Kitsap’s boys soccer team to a 4-0 win against Lincoln.
• 17: Junior Isaiah Davis won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 4 inches at the South Kitsap Invitational.
• 19: Drew Polley, a 2004 South Kitsap graduate, finished 16th in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 36 seconds in the Boston Marathon. He qualified to compete in the U.S. Olympic men’s marathon trials in January 2012 in Houston, where he hopes to gain entry to the Olympics in London.
• 20: South Kitsap’s baseball team, behind a grand slam by Mike Nelson, scored 12 runs during the fourth inning in a 21-2 victory at Stadium. It was the Wolves’ fourth consecutive win.
May
• 12: Junior Riley Dopps finished in 58.24 seconds for South Kitsap during the first day of the Narrows League track and field championships to outlast Shelton’s Brenna Thompson, the defending league champion, in the girls 400-meter dash. Thompson finished in 58.28.
• 14: Emilly Cunningham struck out six batters to help the Wolves win their first Narrows League championship since 2005 with a 3-2 win against Stadium at Tacoma’s South End Recreation Area.
• 15: South Kitsap’s doubles team of Kailyn Skjonsby and Helms won the Narrows League’s girls tennis championship with a 7-5, 6-3 victory versus Olympia’s Bailey Kilmer and Sara Sui at the University of Puget Sound.
• 22: Erika Copeland (800- and 1,600-meter runs), Dopps (800), Kelsie Forcier (discus) and Shelby Jackson (javelin) were the four individuals from South Kitsap’s track and field team to qualify for state out of the West Central District meet.
• 25: Emerald Ridge scored runs in every inning except the second to eliminate South Kitsap’s fastpitch team from the West Central District Tournament. Ericka Hobson went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Wolves in a 13-2 loss.
June
21: Former University of Washington and Seattle Sonics standout Detlef Schrempf held his annual charity golf tournament at McCormick Woods. Without mentioning specific names, Schrempf said there were people working to develop an ownership group and structure for a future NBA team in Seattle. The Sonics moved to Oklahoma City in 2008, where they now are know as the Thunder.
• 26: La Deaux becomes the first South graduate to participate in the state’s Class 3A/4A East-West All-Star Football Game at Everett Memorial Stadium since Renard Williams in 2007. He lined up at cornerback and place-kicker holder for the East squad, which won 28-9.
• 26: Copeland won the female division of the 5-kilometer HotFoot run in 21 minutes, 51 seconds at South Kitsap Community Park.
July
• 24: Dave Villwock, a South Kitsap High School graduate, crossed the finish line first during the 45th Lamb Weston Columbia Cup in Kennewick, but later learned that he was assessed a one-lap penalty. Because of that, Villwock remained with 60 wins, which trails Bill Muncey (62) and Chip Hanauer (61) on the Unlimited Hydroplane career victories list.
August
• 8: Villwock finishes as the runner-up for a second straight race to U-1 driver Steve David during the Albert Lee Cup at Seafair.
September
• 3: Davis and Chris Hutcherson return interceptions to lead South Kitsap’s football team to a 20-6 win to open the season against British Columbia’s Vancouver College High School at Joe Knowles Field.
• 7: Bremerton athletic director George Duarte confirmed that track and field coach Lloyd Pugh would not return for a 14th season in the spring. Pugh, who spent 28 years in the South Kitsap School District, was critical of the Bremerton School District for its handling of a facilities improvement project at Memorial Stadium.
• 13: Willie Bloomquist, a 1996 South Kitsap High School graduate, is traded from Kansas City to Cincinnati. The Reds later won the National League Central with a 91-71 record, but Bloomquist was ineligible to compete in the playoffs because he was traded after Sept. 1.
• 28: Dopps and Brita Oleson each score goals to lead South Kitsap’s girls soccer team to a school-record third consecutive win against perennial league champion Bellarmine Prep.
October
• 5: Sophomores Becca Schoales and Oleson score all the points to lead the Wolves to a 3-1 win against rival Gig Harbor. It is their fifth consecutive victory.
• 8: South Kitsap’s football team loses for the fifth straight time, 27-3, at Bellarmine Prep as its record falls to 1-5. The Wolves, who had not lost against Bellarmine since 1989, have their worst record through six games since 1977.
• 15: D.J. Sigurdson earns his 100th career victory as South Kitsap’s football team wins 35-22 at Mount Tahoma.
• 19: More than 1,000 spectators show up to support the South Kitsap volleyball team in its DiG PiNK match against North Kitsap. DiG PiNK raises money and awareness to fight breast cancer. The Vikings won the nonleague match 25-16, 25-19, 14-25 and 26-24.
• 20: South Kitsap sophomore Jessica Peterson places third for the girls team in the 5-kilometer Narrows League cross-country championships at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood. Both the Wolves’ boys and girls teams qualified for the Westside Cross Country Classic at American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Lakewood because they were among the top four in points scored at the meet.
• 23: Miguel Galeana won the men’s race in 15:49.46, while Kelsi Canavan placed first on the women’s side (20:26.78) in South Kitsap’s first 5-kilometer run.
• 29: Devon Lewis rushed for 140 yards to help Central Kitsap beat South 31-16 at Silverdale Stadium. The loss ended postseason hopes for the Wolves.
• 30: Junior Nicole Hinely finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly at the Class 4A West Central District meet at Rogers High School. The Wolves’ 400-freestyle relay team and senior Angela Pearson (500 freestyle) also advanced to state.
• 30: Sophomore Jessica Peterson finished sixth in the Westside Cross Country Classic at Lakewood’s American Lake Veterans Golf Course. In addition to Peterson, junior Molly Wheeler placed 33rd to advance to state for South.
November
• 5: South Kitsap’s football team loses its season finale at Lincoln, 26-13, to finish with a 3-7 record. It is the school’s worst mark since 1977, and only the Wolves’ second losing season in that span.
• 6: The Wolves’ girls soccer team missed 4 of 5 attempts during a shootout against Kentwood to see their season end in the Class 4A state playoffs. They finished with a 9-3-5 record.
• 13: Hinely finished ninth in the 100-yard butterfly and 14th in the 200 freestyle at the Class 4A state swim and dive meet at the King County Aquatic Center, but perhaps was best remembered for surrendering her spot on 400-freestyle relay team to senior team captain Hannah Straavaldson. The relay finished last in 3:50.33. Pearson also placed 15th in the 500 freestyle (5:28.45).
• 20: Villwock won the Oryx UIM World championship in Qatar to tie the late Bill Muncey on the career Unlimited Hydroplane wins list with 62.
December
• 11: Conner Hartmann (189 pounds) and Cody Barich (145) both went undefeated to help South to a second-place finish at the Olympic Duals at the Kitsap Fairgrounds.
• 17: Williams finishes with one-half sack and six tackles to help Eastern Washington defeat Villanova, 41-31, in the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals at Woodward Stadium in Cheney.
• 17: Junior guard Jackie Steiger scored 13 points to lead South Kitsap’s girls basketball team to a 53-34 win against Stadium in 4A Narrows League play. The Wolves finished the 2010 portion of their league schedule at 3-0 and were 5-0 overall.
