The Bainbridge Spartans competed against the Olympic Trojans in their final matchup of the fall season.

Since the Spartans are a 3A school and play primarily against 2A schools, they cannot compete in the Olympic League Championships.

So, the Olympic matchup was the final match for several players, including multiple seniors.

The Spartans put the Trojans on their heels early as No. 1 single ace Brogan Rice defeated Olympic’s Ryan Flately 6-0, 6-0 within 30 minutes.

Bainbridge led in six matches after playing 45 minutes worth of tennis. However, smoke began to fill the sky, covering the sun and creating a hazy atmosphere over the Bainbridge courts.

Within minutes, the smoke began to give coaches and players headaches after inhaling a rotten smoke scent. Around 5 p.m., Bainbridge’s athletic director Luke Ande met with coaches Mary McCombs and Kristi Gonzalez.

Ande said the air quality index was above 100, the third level. All matches were stopped immediately.

Olympic has a tennis match at home Oct. 14 against Kingston. Therefore, any makeup games with BHS are postponed indefinitely.

Ryann Flately fell to Brogan rice before all matches were stopped immediately.
