Port Orchard’s Roy and Ellie Schaefer’s Atta Boy Roy will take his act to California Sunday for the $300,000 Ancient Title Stakes, Grade I, at Oak Tree, a six-furlong test in which the winner automatically qualifies for the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Sprint Nov. 7.
Trainer Valorie Lund has Atta Boy Roy training at Turf Paradise, where the colt has already recorded two bullet workouts, including an off-the-charts half-mile drill in 44.8 seconds Oct. 4. Ricky Frazier will again have the mount in the Ancient Title.
For sheer speed, Atta Boy Roy is one of the fastest thoroughbreds in the history of the state. His three sprints at Emerald Downs in 2009, all victories, were breathtakingly fast, and he was recognized as the meet’s Top Sprinter and Top Washington-Bred.
The 4-year-old Washington bred by Tribunal won an allowance race by 10-½ lengths tying Starbird Road’s track record of 1:07.4 for six furlongs. He then defeated Horse of the Meeting Assessment while winning the 6-½ furlong Governor’s Handicap in 1:14.2. And finally, he broke Grey Papa’s legendary 37-year-old state record while winning the Chinook Pass Sprint in 1:07 for six furlongs.
In between, Atta Boy Roy ran well in the Longacres Mile. He wound up fifth, while setting the fastest fractions the race had ever seen despite throwing a shoe on the backstretch.

SK grad scheduled for playoff start
South Kitsap High School graduate Jason Hammel was selected to start for the Colorado Rockies in Game 3 of the National League Divisional Series on Saturday against Philadelphia.
Hammel, who graduated from South in 2000, pitched for Tampa Bay last year, but was left off the Rays’ playoff roster.
“This is a great opportunity,” he told the Denver Post. “I am excited.”
Hammel, who was acquired by the Rockies in April in exchange for minor-league pitcher Aneury Rodriguez, started a career-high 30 games this season. He pitched in 34 games and posted a 10-8 record with a 4.33 ERA.
“He has earned it,” Colorado manager Jim Tracy told the Denver Post. “You have to go with what your eyes are telling you.”
“Dig Pink” match approaching
South Kitsap’s volleyball team hosts host Olympic on Oct. 21 in a match that features a challenge beyond the volleyball court.
Both teams and their schools’ athletic-medicine programs have joined to raise money for “Dig Pink,” which raises awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. Besides the outcome on the court, the schools are competing to see which can raise more money for the event.
T-shirts for the match, which cost $5 and are used for admission to the match, can be purchased at Manchester Family, Snap Dog Diner, Bucks A&W, and South Kitsap and Olympic high schools.
“We’re teaching the girls some civic responsibility,” South Kitsap coach Jessica Anderson said before the season. “We think this is a really neat thing for high-school kids to be involved in.”
