at weekend events

The South Kitsap High School girls track-and-field team competed at the Shelton Invitational on Saturday.

Britta Peterson placed fifth in the 3,200-meter run, while the 1,600 relay team of Erica Copeland, Katie Stocker, Molly Werder and Caitlin Daniels finished sixth. Lindsey Porter was second in the pole vault.

There were 78 participating schools at Shelton.

The Wolves’ boys team competed at the Shoreline Invitational. South’s distance medley team of Mitch Brown, Jon Phillips, Matt Benoit and Kyle Stolp placed fifth in that event, while Sean Allison was third in the javelin.

The 400 and 1,600 relay teams placed ninth.

There were 87 schools competing at Shoreline.

South’s next hosts Stadium and Wilson at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Wolves shine in

Jina Romano, Bud Bannon and Katie Del Monte finished first through third, respectively, at the Health Occupation Students of America competition in Boise, Idaho, and will advance to the national competition in June in Dallas.

Bannon also placed second among 300 students and South Kitsap repeated as California State Champions in the small-school classification — less than 15 students testing.

The Wolves also earned 1,643 points (2,000 possible) to win their ninth state title in 10 years in Wenatchee. The following individuals for South also placed among the 273 competing students: Brian Padmos (first), Bannon (fourth), Amanda Feeeney (fifth), Del Monte (seventh), Breann Booher (ninth), Terri Hall (12th), Rachale Barale (21st) and Jina Romano (33rd).

In the junior-varsity competition, several competitors from South placed including Alysha Hartshorn (first), Jacquelyn Henson (second), Ethan Sanchez (fourth), Shiloah Soete-Riedell (eighth), Jacob Ray (ninth), Jordan Thon (14th), Brandon Lester (15th) and Amanda Fusco (17th). There were 175 competitors.
