South Kitsap High School graduate Dave Villwock became the winningest driver in Seafair unlimited hydroplane history Saturday with his 10th victory on Lake Washington.

Villwock passed the legendary Bill Muncey with the win.

Muncey, who was killed during a race in Evansville, Ind., in 1981, holds the circuit record with 61 wins, followed by the retired Chip Hanauer (61) and Villwock (59).

“There’s Muncey and Hanauer and hopefully someday myself as sort of the Mount Rushmore of this sport,” Villwock told The Seattle Times. “Anytime I can eclipse one of those records set by one of those guys who are already etched in granite up on that wall, it’s a special win.”

Villwock, who led the race for the start, has victories in four of five races this season. He can tie Hanauer with wins on Aug. 23 in Evansville or the season-ending Nov. 14 race in Qatar.

Kitsap Pumas’ season ends in heat, heartbreak

Rodrigo Lopez’s goal off a free kick two minutes into added time lifted the Ventura County Fusion past the Kitsap Pumas in the Premier Development League quarterfinals, 2-1, in Laredo, Texas.

The loss ended the Pumas inaugural season in the United Soccer Leagues.

Ventura advances to the semifinals, where it will face either the Laredo (Texas) Heat or Bradenton (Fla.) Academics.

With temperatures creeping above 100 degrees, the Fusion struck first on Anthony Hamilton’s club-high ninth goal of the season in the 27th minute. Hamilton converted after Pumas forward Kyle Johnson hit the crossbar from 30 yards out, setting up a counterattack.

The Pumas tied the game shortly before halftime when 6-foot-5 defender Max Lipset scored on a header off a Steve Mohn throw-in. It was Lipset’s second goal of the season.
