South Kitsap graduate had microfracture surgery on right knee

Mariners’ infielder Willie Bloomquist will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing microfracture surgery Friday on his right knee.

Bloomquist, a 1996 South Kitsap graduate, was injured July 23 while running out an RBI groundout against the New York Mets.

He hit .278 in 47 games this season. Bloomquist signed a 2-year, $5.8 million contract to return to the Mariners on Dec. 5. Seattle drafted him in the third round in 1999 and he previously played with the Mariners from 2002-08.

Williams returns to South Kitsap

Renard Williams, a 2007 South graduate, announced Friday via Twitter that he will join the Wolves’ football staff as a defensive-line coach this season.

The 6-foot-2 defensive tackle helped Eastern Washington University win the Football Championship Subdivision national championship during the 2010 season, when he had six sacks and 16 tackles-for-loss.Williams was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seahawks in 2012, but was released 17 days later.
