Jewett commits to Truman State

North Kitsap High School senior Daniel Jewett made a verbal commitment earlier this month to play baseball at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., next year. He plans to sign a letter of intent in April.

Jewett said he chose the NCAA Division II school because of its environment and he has a chance to play as a freshman. The school is currently being remodeled, and the team is in need of left-handed pitchers, Jewett’s favorite position.

“The school itself was one of the nicest schools I’ve ever seen,” he said. “By the time I’m there it’s going to be pretty much a brand new school.”

Also sweetening the deal was the opportunity for Jewett to receive financial assistance. He will likely receive between $2,000 and $3,000 per year on an academic scholarship, and between $500 and $1,500 per year to play baseball.

Jewett primarily plays outfield for North Kitsap, and pitches part time. He hopes to play both positions at Truman State.

“I like pitching, but I also like hitting, so I would have to play outfield,” Jewett said. “But I’d have to say pitching is my favorite.”

Velarde takes first at wrestling tourney

North Kitsap High School freshman Jake Velarde took first place in the 119-pound division at the Bearcat Invite in Monroe Dec. 19. Velarde pinned Shorewood High’s Brandon Leach for the win.

The North Kitsap team placed fifth out of 13 teams at the tournament.

Four other North Kitsap wrestlers placed in the tournament. Donny Stamaris, Michael Coulter and Allan Dunlap each took third place in their weight classes, and Matt Moriarty finished fourth.
