Army-Navy rugby game

The 10th annual Commander’s Cup rugby match against Fort Lewis is tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Strawberry Fields in Poulsbo.

An event that pits representative players from Naval Base Kitsap (the “Bangor” Renegades) against players from the Fort Lewis Army Base (Ft. Lewis Stud Dawgs), the Commander’s Cup includes players who are active duty military members, veterans and Department of Defense employees.

The match will be preceded by a youth introduction-to-rugby workshop, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The clinic is open to athletes ages 14 to 18, both boys and girls, who are interested in a hands-on introduction to the sport of rugby.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. at Field No. 8. There is no cost for either event. Young athletes are encouraged to attend and RSVP to youthrugby@kitsaprugby.org.

Upcoming Kitsap Pumas events

The Kitsap Soccer Club is hosting open tryouts for prospective professional players Feb. 13 and 14 at Gordon Field at the Fairgrounds.

The non-refundable registration fee is $50. Prospects are encouraged to pre-register via the club Web site — www.kitsapsoccerclub.com — prior to Feb. 5 because demand is high. Pre-payment options have yet to be announced.

A reduced rate for lodging at the official team hotel is available for out-of-area trialists. Consult the Web site for details.

The club also recently launched a “Scarf Kitsap – and Beyond!!!” contest. The fan who sends in the most creative photo, incorporating an official Kitsap Pumas club scarf, will receive four complimentary tickets to the 2010 regular-season home opener.

Fans must post their entries to the team’s official Facebook page by April 22. Pumas players, coaches and staff will determine a winner.

“This should be a lot of fun,” said executive director Ben Pecora. “We received a few shots from fans over the summer showing their scarves from different places around the region – and the globe – and it was this initiative that gave us the idea to hold this sort of contest.”

The Olympic Soccer and Sports Center, located at Pendergast Park in Bremerton, is hosting the first-ever “PumasWinterStravaganza!” tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event, featuring Pumas players and coaches, includes training sessions, a jamboree, meet-and-greet opportunities, soccer aerobics, and skills contests.
