Snowy weather postpones high school games

Bremerton and Central Kitsap School District high schools have to wait to compete again. The snow postponed all after-school activities and games for Bremerton and Central Kitsap school districts Tuesday. The boys basketball game between Bremerton High School and North Kitsap High School was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in Poulsbo. Other postponed events have yet to be rescheduled as of press time. Meanwhile, the Klahowya Secondary School boys basketball team had its Jan. 7 home game against Port Townsend High School stopped with 6 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Water fell from the roof, creating a slippery hardwood for the athletes. Klahowya Athletic Director Todd Winters wrote in an e-mail that the school is having issues with the gymnasium’s roof.

Kitsap Pumas announce tryouts

The Kitsap Pumas soccer club announced last week that its annual open tryouts for the outdoor pro season will be held March 5 and 6 at Silverdale’s Gordon Field. All players who register will compete on the first day. The registration fee is $50 per athlete. Pre-registration is required for the tryouts. The Pumas’ waiver and registration forms must be completed and filed to the club before participation.

Athletes may also turn in their paperwork at the first day of tryouts before competing. The Pumas are entering their third professional season after reaching the postseason quarterfinals in each of the last two years.

Lady Cougars earn academic recognition

The Central Kitsap High School girls soccer team received high acclaim from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) earlier this month. The Lady Cougars earned WIAA Outstanding Achievement Scholastic Awards for academic excellence. The varsity team compiled a 3.521 grade point average, while the junior varsity squad had a 3.531 GPA. Ridgetop Junior High teacher Vicky Webb and Central Kitsap network specialist Jan Vincent coached the teams.

Bremerton Elks crowns annual Hoop Shoot winners

The Bremerton Elks returned with its annual Hoop Shoot event last week, crowning the top youth basketball shooters in Bremerton and Central Kitsap. The Kitsap County Hoop Shoot Finalists won trophies for first, second and third place. The 39th annual event included 15 schools.

For the 8 to 9 years old boys group, Caleb-Tyree Morgan (Cottonwood Elementary) won the top prize after shooting 64 percent. Katelyn Gibbs (Woodlands Elementary) won the girls division with a 48 percent shooting average.

Other winners included C.J. Lingat (Pinecrest Elementary) of the 10 to 11 boys group with an 80 percent tally, while Amanda McCarthy of Woodlands shot 52 percent to win the girls division.

For the 12 to 13 boys group, Cougar Valley Elementary’s Ian Cochran made 80 percent of his shots to finish in first place.

Central Kitsap Junior High School’s Starr Rodenhurst won the girls 12 to 13 division with a 76 percent average from the line.

Olympic High sponsors game to raise awareness

Olympic High School and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will sponsor the Educators vs. Enforcement charity basketball game at 6 p.m. on Jan. 27. The game will include Kitsap law enforcement and teachers trying to raise awareness about drinking and driving. Admission for those 18 years or younger is free and tickets are $2 for adults. MADD will accept donations at the school for anyone willing to support the chapter. Pumas tickets on sale for 2011

The Kitsap Pumas soccer club announced Wednesday that season ticket packages for the upcoming 2011 outdoor season are on sale.

Prices for the packages, one each for adults and youths, are the same as the past two seasons, while the club increased the number of admissions included in each.

The Pumas Flex Paks are also on sale now. Purchases made before Feb. 15 will include a free ticket for the Pumas’ international friendly match against English club Port Vale this summer.

Full-season packages will include tickets to all regular season home matches, including the U.S. Open Cup, playoffs and championship matches.

Adult packages are $99, while youth packages are priced at $25 this season.
