Brackets set for WIAA state tournaments

The Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association has posted the brackets for the 2011 Hardwood Classic state basketball tournaments in February. Brackets include dates and locations for boys and girls in each WIAA classification.

The Class 2A and 1A tournaments will be hosted at the Yakima Valley SunDome. The Class 3A and 4A tournaments will return to the Tacoma Dome. For more information, visit the WIAA website at www.wiaa.com.

ISPN returns for another season with BlueJackets

Kevin Mac, the voice of the Kitsap BlueJackets, announced earlier this week that he will return for his seventh season as a broadcaster for the amateur baseball team in Bremerton.

Mac, who was hired by the club in 2005, also operates ISPN Sports, which was retained by the BlueJackets for a fourth straight year.

The sports broadcaster said he plans to broadcast Olympic College baseball this spring, which is available at www.ispnsports.com.

The network is currently airing Bremerton Knights basketball coverage every week in addition to the ISPN Sports Show, a two-hour program that airs Saturdays at 10 a.m.

Olympic High sponsors game to raise awareness

Olympic High School and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will sponsor the Educators vs. Enforcement charity basketball game at 6 p.m. on Jan. 27. The game will include Kitsap law enforcement and teachers trying to raise awareness about drinking and driving.

Admission for those 18 years or younger is free and tickets are $2 for adults. MADD will accept donations at the school for anyone willing to support the chapter.

Seahawks flag disappears

To add insult to injury for Seattle Seahawks fan Dona Ross, her 12th Man flag was stolen Jan. 14.

Meanwhile, the team lost to the Chicago Bears in the divisional playoff round Sunday, 35-24.

Ross, who lives on Chico Way, placed the blue flag inside the mouth of the Loch Ness monster sculpture Sunday built by her late husband, Pete Ross.

The flag had more sentimental value than anything, as it was bought five years ago when the Seahawks earned a trip to Super Bowl XL.

She left her home at 6:30 p.m. and returned at 10:30 p.m. to find her flag gone. Ross doesn’t plan to file a police report.

“I’m surprised it stayed up that long, to tell you the truth,” she said Tuesday. “Things that aren’t tacked down get stolen on Chico Way. It’s such a busy roadway, kids live along it, so it’s expected.”

She’s displayed the Seahawks wares before, but last week was the first time it was placed at the monster.

Pumas tickets on sale for 2011

The Kitsap Pumas soccer club announced last week that season ticket packages for the upcoming 2011 outdoor season are on sale.

Prices for the packages, one each for adults and youths, are the same as the past two seasons, while the club increased the number of admissions included in each.

The Pumas Flex Paks are also on sale now. Purchases made before Feb. 15 will include a free ticket for the Pumas’ international friendly match against English club Port Vale this summer.

Full-season packages will include tickets to all regular season home matches, including the U.S. Open Cup, playoffs and championship matches.

Adult packages are $99, while youth packages are priced at $25 this season.

Central Kitsap High places ninth at Matman Classic

Central Kitsap High School and head wrestling coach Mike Harter hosted the Matman Classic Saturday, finishing ninth out of 14 teams.

Central Kitsap’s Ian Sprecher tied for fifth place in the 130-pound weight class, which was won by Antonio Brown of Orting High School. Sprecher’s teammate, Shaq Blair, ended the day tied for third in the 189-pound weight class.

Meanwhile, Cougars wrestlers Joel Eklof (215 weight class) and Kyle Lanoue (285 weight class) finished tied for fifth and second, respectively.

Orting won the event with a team score of 218. Graham-Kapowsin High School (209 points), Enumclaw High School (205 points), Tahoma High School (173 points) and South Kitsap High School (138 points) round out the top five performances. The Cougars tallied 85 points.

Cougars wrestling defeats Gig Harbor High

The Central Kitsap High School wrestling team defeated Gig Harbor High School on Jan. 13, 51-21.

Andrew Guertin of Central Kitsap won the 112-pound weight class by forfeit. Warren Specher (119 weight class), Joey Troyer (125 weight class) and Raven Paulino (140 weight class) claimed victories for the Cougars by pinfall. Kurt Koemmple won the 145-pound weight class by forfeit.

Central Kitsap’s heavier winners included Tyler Kahl (152 pounds), Brett McDonald (171 pounds), Shaq Blair (189 pounds), Joel Eklof (215 pounds) and Kyle Lanoue (285 pounds) in the team’s final tuneup before the Matman Classic.

Bremerton High swim team loses

The Bremerton High School boys swim team lost to Kingston High School on Jan. 13, 122-48.

Knights swimmer Mark Woolnough swam to a victory in the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 54:78.

Woolnough also won the 200-yard individual medley event with a time of 2:10.90.

Kingston’s relay teams, which consisted of Jake Kivstad, Dylon Szerlog, Kevin Fox, Ethan Bella and Forrest Taylor, swept the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays with times of 2:00.75 and 4:08.07, respectively.

Boys youth lacrosse starts

The boys youth lacrosse season is underway as registration is now open for the spring 2011 season.

Those interested in playing for one of the three squads, which are divided between grades 3 through 8, are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

A parent meeting will be hosted at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30 at the Olympic Soccer and Sports Center in Bremerton.

Eagles win Olympic League bowling title

The Klahowya Secondary School girls bowling team clinched the Olympic League title Tuesday with a home victory against North Mason High School.

The Eagles defeated North Mason, 7-0. Klahowya’s total pin fall of 2,043 bested North Mason’s 1,438 tally.

Megan Shultz finished with a game-high score of 222 for Klahowya. Her teammate, Carys Bailey, totaled a series-high score of 382.

The victory capped off a week of competition for Klahowya, which had three games in six days. The Eagles defeated reigning league champions Olympic High School, 5-2 last Friday at All-Star Lanes in Silverdale.

Klahowya’s total pin fall score of 2,196 surpassed the Lady Trojans’ tally of 2,182. Bailey led the Eagles with a game-high score of 236, and a series-high score of 471.

The Lady Trojans were led by Kendra Willis, who finished the afternoon with a game-high total of 245. She also scored a series-high 479. Klahowya defeated Bremerton High School, 7-0 on Jan. 13.

Klahowya and Olympic each finished the season 10-2, but the Eagles won the tiebreaker in the head-to-head matchup.

The Eagles won the season series, 2-1. Meanwhile, Bremerton finished 6-5.
