Olympic College competes at Regionals

Olympic College sent its cross country squads to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Cross Country championships on Nov. 13, but the Rangers failed to place in the top-10 in both the men’s and women’s final standings. Saturday’s event was hosted by Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore.

Jessica Duckworth placed 56th in the 5KM race with a time of 21:42. Brittany Siegrist finished a few spots behind with a 60th-place finish and a time of 22:04. Rachel Feiring (22:29) and Taylor Person (22:36) finished in 64th and 65th-place, respectively.

Angela Hanners (23:18) placed 67th, while Jennifer Burrell (28:31) rounded out the 5KM race with a 75th-place finish. Olympic’s women’s team left Oregon City with an 11th-place finish of 12 teams who competed.

Meanwhile, the men’s team produced similar results with another 11th-place overall finish for Olympic. The Rangers were led by Jeremy Delicino, whose time of 26:49 was good enough for 17th place in the 8KM race. Josh Caldwell’s time of 28:10 earned him a 46th-place finish. Andrew Crain (28:56), Devon Wright (29:11) and Brenden Schruhl (29:28) ended the day in 61st, 63rd and 67th-place, respectively.

Andrew Crock (30:35) ended up in 73rd place, while Nick Tamm (31:06) completed the 8KM field in 75th place. The race featured 12 schools and 81 runners.

Football stars named to All-Olympic squad

The All-Olympic League team was released this week with several Bremerton High School and Olympic High School stars earning recognition for the 2010 season. Bremerton senior running back Kyle Kennedy earned a spot on the league’s offensive first-team. Olympic senior running back Shawn Brown and wide receiver Sam Gesicki were also named to the first-team. Bremerton senior offensive lineman Max Hayes earned second-team honors.

Three Bremerton athletes made the list of defensive first-team. Linebacker Andrew Shadle, senior defensive lineman Shawn Hall and senior defensive back Sabian Perrigo were all named to the defensive first-team. Fellow Knights senior linebacker DeDe Harris earned second-team honors, along with Olympic’s senior defensive lineman Ezra Timateo and defensive back Trey Fullilove. Bremerton senior specialist Perrigo also earned league honors.

Girls soccer athletes earn league honors

The All-Olympic League team for girls soccer was also released this week with athletes from Bremerton, Olympic and Klahowya Secondary School earning top honors. Bremerton’s Rachael Pratt earned first-team honors, while teammate Amelia Williams made the second-team. Olympic’s Jalyn Halstead, Micaylla O’Leary and Gabby Tyner made the first-team and Sierra Keffer was named to the second team. Klahowya had the most athletes on the league team with nine, including first-teamers Jordan Dixon, Jessica Haga and Katyln Sargent, along with second-team honorees Ruthie Hawley, Rachel Lindgren and Ashley Mjor. Honorable mention honors were given to Cassondra Dick, Brittany Robinson and Carly Whetsel of Klahowya. Olympic’s Monica Lopez, Teresa Morrell and Megan Smith earned the same honors with Bremerton’s Evelin Marcials, Abby Niel and Sydney Williams.

BHS girls bowling team falls to Olympic

Bremerton’s girls bowling team lost a close home game, 5-2, to Olympic on Tuesday. The Knights’ total pin fall was 1658 to Olympic’s score of 1643. Bremerton’s Shannara Hankinson and Abby King scored 377 and 376 points, respectively. Alexus Lucas finished with a score of 325, while Helaina Hilligoss ended the night with a 274 pin fall tally. Allie Taylor (170) and Brittany Schroeder (136) rounded out the team scores in the narrow defeat.

Sounders player headlines charity

The Olympic Soccer and Sports Center announced this week that Seattle Sounders player and Kingdom Hope founder Steve Zakuani will visit their facility in Bremerton on Saturday, Dec. 11. Zakuani is visiting to raise money for charity and will host a soccer youth clinic from 2-4 p.m. for children ages 9-15. The Sounders FC star will sign autographs following the clinic, which may also feature two of Zakuani’s Seattle teammates.

The cost for the clinic is $100 per child. Kids will have two hours of field time with Zakuani and receive a T-shirt and soccer ball. Registration for the event is limited to the first 50 children. Autographs will be $5 each, and limited to one per person. The proceeds benefit Kingdom Hope and America Scores Seattle.

Bremerton wrestler shares title

Ivan Gaeta of Bremerton earned championship honors for the first time last week at the Knox (Ill.) Invitational.

Gaeta, who graduated from Olympic High School, started competition with a 10-3 decision over Caleb Staub of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Wisconsin. The Olympic grad followed with a 6-1 victory over his teammate, Nate Fell. Gaeta wrapped up a co-championship with a 7-6 decision against James Briangance of Oklahoma City University. The 184-pound co-champion was seeded No. 1 at the invitational, and shared the title with teammate Greg Barner. Gaeta earned the team’s most improved performer award for the 2009-10 season.

Pokemon comes to Bremerton

The first round of city Pokemon tournaments will be hosted at 9 a.m. on Nov. 27 in the Perry Ave Mall in Bremerton. The tournament is free and offers players a chance to compete and improve deck strategy. Players may also earn premier ratings that could lead to invitations to future Pokemon tournaments. The city tournaments are the first round in the Play! Pokemon Championship Series, which will crown a champion in August 2011.

Olympic High hosts basketball program

Olympic High School’s boys basketball program is sponsoring the 2nd annual Basketball Skills Clinic, hosted by OHS head coach Devin Huff. The clinic is for boys and girls grades kindergarten through eighth. The clinic is set to take place on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at the OHS Gymnasium. Registration will take place the day of the event, but presenters are encouraging early registration. Forms are available via e-mail request, or on the OHS website.
