Lady Trojans lose at state
The Olympic High School girls basketball team’s run at the Class 2A state tournament ended Feb. 25 with a 59-46 loss to Tumwater High School.
The elimination game was hosted by Foss High School in Tacoma.
Olympic (16-11) was led by senior forward Shannon Jackson’s 21 points, along with eight from guard Jalyn Halstead.
Katie Bergquist scored a team-high 16 points for Tumwater (19-4).
The game marked the first state tournament appearance for Olympic since 1995.
Olympic League names top basketball stars
The Olympic League announced its 2011 list of the top high school boys and girls basketball players Monday and recognition went to 21 athletes from Central Kitsap and Bremerton.
Senior Andre Coleman of Bremerton High School was a first-team selection on the boys roster. Olympic High School’s Trent Gallagher and Quintin Phillips also earned first-team honors.
Senior Zane Ravenholt of Kingston High School was named most valuable player.
The second team included Klahowya Secondary School senior Derris Davis. The honorable mention list was rounded out by Olympic’s Qui Jan Otis and Chris Campbell; Bremerton’s Andrew Shadle and Michael Lawrence; Klahowya’s Mitch Flowers, Chris Smith and Clark Rose.
The girls first team included senior forward Shannon Jackson of Olympic and Bremerton’s Kourtney Carpenter.
Klahowya senior Jordan Dixon was named to the second team.
Honorable mentions included Olympic’s Jalyn Halstead and Ashli Payne; Bremerton’s Sawyer Kluge and Jalen Carpenter; Klahowya’s Jonica Durbin, Kori Holt and Sally Fletcher.
Top wrestlers earn recognition by league
Grapplers from Central Kitsap and Bremerton were honored last week when the Olympic League named its 2011 top selections for wrestling.
Olympic High School’s Cody Yeik (125-pound weight class) earned all-league honors along with Klahowya Secondary School’s Adam Burchett (103), Jared Sell (135), seniors Kevin Schiffman (145) and Nehemiah Salo (171). The male most valuable player award went to North Mason High School’s Zac Joaquin (112) and Kingston High School’s Bobby Reece (140).
Bremerton High School senior Lauren Richardson (112) took home the female most valuable player accolade.
USGA returns to Gold Mountain
The United States Golf Association announced last month that the Gold Mountain Golf Club, a 36-hole municipal complex in Bremerton, will once again host an amateur golf tournament July 18 to 23. Gold Mountain hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links in 2006, and will return with the 2011 Junior Amateur at the 7,133-yard Olympic course.
The Gold Mountain management team has been asked by the association to prepare a seminar for other managing teams from various association championship sites. Although junior amateur tournaments are normally hosted by private clubs, Gold Mountain was granted the chance to hold this year’s championship at its public course.
“It’s good for our facility, it’s good for the championship, it’s good for the atmosphere of the championship,” Scott Alexander, director of golf at Gold Mountain, said in a statement. Lagat’s Hoop Shoot run ends
C.J. Lagat of Bremerton competed in the state round of the Elks Hoop Shoot last month, finishing fifth and out of contention for regionals. Lagat (Pinecrest Elementary) hit 12 of 25 free throws in the 10 to 11-year-old boys group. The event was hosted by Highland Middle School in Bellevue. Lagat is eligible to return for the 40th annual Bremerton Elks Hoop Shoot next year.
ISPN Sports to recap Kitsap prep basketball
Kevin Mac will broadcast live coverage of the ISPN Sports Show at 10 a.m. to noon Saturday with highlights and interviews from the past week of high school sports on www.ispnsports.com. Mac will also feature game replays following each high school matchup. The show will include highlights and interviews from players and coaches on Olympic College’s mens and womens basketball teams.
Kitsap Pumas soccer club releases 2011 schedule
The Kitsap Pumas soccer club released its 2011 regular-season schedule last week for the outdoor team, which will play host to British club Port Vale in July.
Entering their third year, the Pumas start the season May 1 against the Vancouver Whitecaps on the road in British Columbia.
The team will return to Bremerton for three straight home games, which include Victoria (May 8), Washington (May 14) and Portland (May 21).
The four matches serve as qualifiers for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in addition to the Northwest Division standings of the Premier Development League.
The Pumas will play six of their last eight matches at home, including a July 19 friendly game with Port Vale.
Kitsap will close the season at home against Victoria July 23.
In addition, the club announced that it will not increase ticket prices. It is the second year tickets have remained the same price.
Season ticket and flex packages are currently on sale. The Kid’s Pass season ticket for fans ages 4 to 15 are $25.
Season adult packages are $99, which includes 12 tickets.
Other offers include six-ticket, $45, 20-ticket, $160 and 30-ticket packages, $210.
