With the fairways and greens sparkling, a full field of golfers turned out for the seventh annual Semancik Memorial/Bremerton Alumni Golf Tournament on a sunny afternoon last weekend.
A combined 114 business and community members — not including golfers — sponsored the tournament to raise more than $16,000, an all-time high. All proceeds after expenses go toward the Semancik Foundation scholarship fund, which is used to help Bremerton High students further their post prep education.
“Our credo is, ‘The more you help us, the more of these very special kids we can reach,” said Bremerton High School assistant principal and Semancik Foundation board member Ken Aries.
Steve Bramwell, a former West High Wildcat All-State running back who went on to play at the University of Washington, was the guest speaker at the 5th Quarter Awards Luncheon/Silent Auction and Raffle.
“I can feel the closeness, a real pride in Bremerton, in this room,” Bramwell told the crowd. “I have got to be a bigger part of this.”
For the first time in tournament history, there was a hole-in-one. Dave Larmar of Port Orchard carded the ace on the Par-3 13th while participating in the Pepsi/Silver City Restaurant and Brewery Challenge. Administering the contest for the foundation was former Bremerton High teacher/coach Mike McKnight.
“It was a really nice tee shot that hit the green and rolled right into the cup,” McKnight said of the shot.
The Semancik Foundation awarded two continuing education scholarships to former Semancik Scholarship recipients.
Jennifer Smalley, who attends Eastern Oregon University, was presented the Al Colvin Award by Hazel Colvin. Chris Martindale, who attends Central Washington University, received the Bremerton High Class of 1953 scholarship, which was presented by class members Jean Copper and Sarann Walker.
Superintendent Lester “Flip” Herndon and BHS Principal Katherine Gleysteen were among the faces in the crowd, joining Bremerton, East and West High alum as well as former athletes and coaches from South Kitsap and the Central Kitsap District.
