Team Storm qualifies for state championship in Spokane

The team is headed to Spokane for state championships March 16-18.

PORT ORCHARD — The South Kitsap area’s Team Storm has qualified for the State Middle School Basketball Championships and are off to Spokane on March 16-18.

Team Storm is an AAU basketball program that plays in the local SKYAA Elite league and is comprised of girls ages 10 and 11 from the Port Orchard area. Many of the players have been under the direction of coaches Jamie DeFevers and James Brady for more than five years.

The team qualified via its performances at the Warehouse Holiday Hoops tournament in Port Angeles, at which they finished in first place. It also scored a second-place performance at Jan Slam in Kelso in January.

When they’re not on the court, the girls have made time to complete community service projects throughout South Kitsap, specifically working with Coffee Oasis and several senior living centers in the region.

The tournament will take place at several venues throughout the Spokane Valley to accommodate the number of teams participating, including the Spokane Convention Center, The Warehouse Athletic Facility, HUB Regional Sports Center and Spokane Fitness Center.
