The Buc Stops Here

A look at what's going on at Kingston High School.

The school year has stepped off with quite an exciting start! Our Kingston football team beat Chimacum in the first game of the season with the final score of 13-8. KHS’s fan turnout for the game was exceptional. While watching the game, fans were able to hit up the snack bar and buy Buc gear as well. Both stands were run by parents of KHS students. During halftime, the marching band performed its rendition of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” The cheerleaders never stopped cheering during game, leading the crowd in rooting the Bucs on.

While outside sports are going on, we’re beginning to lose sunlight and the days are shortening. It’s just not possible for us to practice in the dark. Since last year, athletic students and parents have been raising money for the “Got 2 C 2 Play” fund. At the local Kitsap Credit Union bank (inside Albertsons) you can buy a button with the fundraiser logo for just $2. They have been doing a great job and community support has been fantastic. We can’t wait for it to payoff!

Classes are underway and everyone has become accustomed to new schedules. Students now get a 52-minute lunch period compared to last year when we only had 30 minutes. I think all the students who go off campus for lunch appreciate the extra time.

North Kitsap School District made history on the evening of Sept. 12 when KHS and North Kitsap High School played a varsity football match. A friendly rivalry ensued between fans but in the end, Kingston did not win the game. The Bucs still played a great game and we can’t wait to see others in the future.

Other fall sports have been well underway since school started. Boys’ tennis, cross-country, girls’ volleyball and girls’ soccer have all been doing great. All the players are dedicated with some practices going for three hours and Saturday practices as well.

This year it was announced there would no longer be activity buses (buses that take students home later in the evening after practice). Now parents have to pick up their teenagers instead of transportation being provided, which is a plus for practices or meetings that run late, but a hassle to parents who work. A huge THANK YOU to those who have stayed so dedicated in this new situation.

Homecoming is just around the corner. Guests are more than welcome if they are under 21 and have a dance pass. Dance passes can be obtained at the Treasure Cove or any school office. So parents, prepare your cameras as the Buccaneers take on Sequim High School Oct. 10. Guys get your dress shirts out and girls find those dresses!

Meagan Rasely is a sophomore at Kingston High School where her favorite subject is English. She also plays volleyball and piano.
