The Bremerton track and field team held its own at the South Kitsap Invite last weekend, with the girls taking eighth and the boys 15th place overall despite wind, rain, sleet and yes, even snow.
Jacki Hill once again led the girls, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.8 seconds while finishing a close second in the 100. Her time of 13.09 was just .04 behind North Kitsap’s Siara Byers.
Both Stephanie Himmelsbach and Angela Anderson were busy for Bremerton, with Himmelsbach taking second in the high jump (4-feet, 8-inches), fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.93) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (54.24). Anderson was just a step ahead of Himmelsbach in the 100 hurdles, taking third with a time of 17.92. Anderson also finished second in the pole vault, clearing 8-feet flat.
For the boys, Jamaree Wells did most the team point scoring, taking fifth with a time of 12.05 in the 100 and seventh in the 200 (24.58). Kyle Kendry was the only other placer for the boys, finishing fourth in the javelin after his toss of 143-01.
Golf
Bremerton’s girls golf team received a freebie April 10, winning an uncontested match against Port Townsend at the Port Townsend Golf Course.
Because PT currently has zero golfers on its roster, the Lady Knights got an automatic victory and played the course only to make the game official.
“In order to make the match official, we still had to play,” Bremerton coach Emily Crawford explained.
With no opponent, Bremerton’s golfers hit the ball around simply to work on their game.
“I feel the girls played pretty solid,” Crawford said. “It was a course we’ve never been to before, and I feel they played to the best of their abilities.”
Converting short-range shots, especially on the green, has proved troublesome for Bremerton all season and Crawford said Thursday’s match was no different.
“The only area I saw where some of the girls were struggling would be around the green,” she said. “We’ve been working on improving our putting and chipping strengths, but sometimes old habits return.”
The Lady Knights took the links Thursday against Olympic at Gold Mountain Golf Complex. Results were not available at press time. The team visits Peninsula Tuesday for a 3 p.m. match.
Fastpitch
While the Lady Knights remain winless on the fastpitch field, the team showed signs of life last Thursday, posting three runs in a 13-3 loss against Klohowya.
All coming in the top of the fifth, the runs snapped what nearly became a five-game scoreless streak as the team had been shut out by its previous four opponents — defending 2A state champs North Mason, Peninsula, Olympic and Port Angeles.
On Monday against Port Townsend, the Lady Knights fell 10-0 in a five-inning game.
Results from Wednesday’s home game against perennial powerhouse North Mason were not available at press time. The team hosts Peninsula at 4 p.m. Tuesday and will travel to Olympic for a 4 p.m. game Thursday, ending the regular season.
