Turnovers plague SK in final game of year

South Kitsap had no answer for Rogers’ full-court press.

The Wolves fell to the Rams 43-31 on Senior Night at South Kitsap High School Jan. 30.

SK junior Peyton Evans said the Wolves wanted to give their all in the last game of the season. “This is a place to put it all out on the court,” Evans said. “We knew coming in we were going to be viewed as underdogs, and our goal was to show off who we are.”

The first period got off to a slow start for both teams offensively, with neither team able to put any points on the board until the six-minute mark.

The turnover bug began to bite the Wolves early but Camille Citizen was able to draw fouls against the Rams, allowing her to get to the free-throw line multiple times in the quarter, leading to four points. Freshman guard Jenna Booth added two as the home team trailed 12-7.

The second quarter saw more of the same with Rogers continuing to shoot well from the field and limiting the Wolves scoring opportunities with the press leading to more turnovers. Booth and senior guard Mika Brady accounted for all of the Wolves’ scoring in the second period but Rogers led at the break 21-14.

Junior SK guard Sylvi Allen noted how the full-court press affected her team. “You know, you have to calm down and slow down the game,” Allen said.

The Wolves managed to put their highest-scoring quarter in the third with eight points. Allen scored four and junior guard Peyton Evans two, with Booth adding another two. Still, the Rams led 31-21.

The Wolves began a full-court press of their own in the fourth, but were still outscored 12-10 in the last quarter.

Evans noted how the team could improve next year. “We know that since we lost our height last year, we know that we have to focus on rebounds offensively and defensively,” she said. “That’s how we’re gonna stay on top.”
