Velarde wins state WSWA wrestling championship

Eleven wrestlers from Kitsap County competed in the 2011 WSWA Cadet & Junior Freestyle State Championships.

Included in the 11 was North Kitsap High School sophomore Jake Velarde of Hansville, who took the championship in the 135- pound division.

The WSWA title adds to Velarde’s previous accomplishments, which include two state titles wrestling for North Kitsap at the Mat Classic.

Velarde competed as part of the Northwest Washington Wrestling Club. The club finished sixth overall in the 72-team tournament. Nine of the NWWC wrestlers finished in the top eight of their weight class, qualifying to wrestle for Team Washington at the USAW Cadet & Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND July 15-23.
