KINGSTON — The North Kitsap Vikings varsity soccer team March 19 is closer to the team head coach Greg St. Peter expects to see the rest of the season.

The Vikes defeated the Kingston Buccaneers 6-1 at Buc Field.

“The key word was consistency,” St. Peter said.

Daniel Norberg started things off for the Vikes in the fifth minute, scoring off an assist from Tareg Matala-Alvarez.

Brady Sparrow scored the Vikes second goal in the 25th minute, with an assist from Nathan Foster.

St. Peter said there were “great performances” by both Foster and Norberg, the Vikings’ team captains. Foster scored one goal and had two assists. Norberg scored twice, with one assist.

Kingston’s single goal was scored in the 50th minute by Ross Burke, with an assist by Alex Hernandez.

The Vikings’ victory was the result of the players focusing and working together, St. Peter said. The players are understanding their roles now, he said.

When it comes to the attack, the Vikings are patient, and can be explosive when they need to be, St. Peter said. The formation they played in against the Bucs spread out the Buc defense, while utilizing speed on the edges of the field.

“The guys really responded to it well,” St. Peter said. “Our system is pretty well-rounded on defense and offense.

“When we’re on our game like last night, it will be difficult to beat us.” The Vikings (2-1 in league play) were defeated 3-1 by the Olympic Trojans March 12. The loss was unfortunate, St. Peter said, “but it wasn’t us.” Last night the Vikings showed what they were capable of, he said.

North Kitsap remains the varsity team to beat in the Olympic League, according to an email from Kingston head coach Craig Smith.

Smith is rebuilding the 2013 “around the edges,” and still has players such as Nick Boles, the league’s top scorer in 2012, and Ross Burke. Burke will be covering more ground as a defender and midfielder this season.

Other players that will see more time on the field include Tommy Nitchman and Alex Worland, who is playing goalie while Kyle Van Wyck is out from a knee injury. Freshman Leo and Alex Hernandez and Jovi Hernandez are playing at varsity level. And Kennedy Rebmon and Jake Waterman may earn starting spots for their first year on varsity. Colin Stone, kicker for the varsity football team, is going to be a “great asset to the team” as well, Smith wrote.

The Vikings host Port Angeles March 21, Junior Varsity plays at 5 p.m., Varsity at 6:45 p.m.

The Bucs are on a bye March 21. The team travels to Port Angeles March 23, Junior Varsity plays at 11 a.m., Varsity at 12:45 p.m.
