SEQUIM — It was a sweet victory for the Vikings varsity team Dec. 18, when the team defeated the Sequim Wolves, ending its losing streak.
“We lost three in a row, for self-confidence it was a big win,” Viking head coach Tim French said.
The Vikings won 50-31 on the road. The team’s Olympic League record is now 3-3. Sequim’s loss bumps its record down to 2-4.
On any night, a team can suddenly step up and win. French said playing in the Olympic League feels “like an uphill battle from the start.”
“It’s a nice boost,” French added.
The Vikings outscored the Wolves three of the four quarters. The team, down 13-9 at the beginning of the second, scored 18 to the Wolves’ 9. The Vikings continued the moment, scoring 12-5 in the third and 13-5 in the fourth.
Rebekah Baugh dominated the scoreboard with 18 points. Baugh leads the team in steals, assists and scoring.
“Her percentages are only going to get better,” French said. North Kitsap’s Kristin Brown scored 10 in the night and earned nine rebounds — Molly Lemmon currently leads the Vikings in rebounds and had seven against the Wolves.
A few Junior Varsity players stepped up as well.
Annika Krol and Melissa Hamblet both played “amazingly well,” French said.
And Patricia Halir continues to surprise the team with what she can do, French said.
The Vikings currently had four varsity players out with injuries against the Wolves, including Leah Baugh, Addie Clark, Emmalee Nold and Sheridan Sanchez. Clark and Sanchez are expected to return for the game against the Kingston Buccaneers Dec. 21. Baugh and Nold may be out for a few weeks.
Though adjustments had to be made, French applauded the Vikings’ ability to hold the Wolves to 31 points. That included keeping Sequim’s top scorer, Alexas Basand, to four points, which French credits Halir and Krol with.
“We’ll just have to play together … play smarter,” French said of the Vikings.
The Vikings are next up against the Kingston Buccaneers (3-3) Dec. 21 in the Kingston High School Gymnasium. Junior Varsity is scheduled for 5:15 p.m., Varsity begins at 7 p.m.
