POULSBO — The combination of talent and dedication is potent in any sport.

For the North Kitsap High track and field teams, that recipe has already led to an Olympic League championship and a sub-district title this year. The Vikings will send more than 30 athletes to the West Central District championships in Tacoma this weekend for a chance to qualify for state.

“We have a lot of very, very talented kids. But they also help themselves out by working pretty hard,” coach Dave Snyder said.

Relay teams, sprinters and distance runners make up the bulk of the competitors going to districts. Senior Alex Flores leads the boys, racing in the 100- and 200-meter sprints as well as the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relays.

Flores suffered injuries and infections the past two seasons. This year, he exploded onto the track and is determined to qualify for the state meet in at least one of his four events.

“Maybe I just have a chip on my shoulder from missing my last two years in track,” Flores said.

The girls team, like the boys side, is stacked with talent in sprints, distance and relays, among other events. But it’s a hurdler who’s turning heads. Reagan Colyer, a 5-foot-9-inch freshman, has surprised her coaches with her natural abilities.

“She’s far exceeded my expectations,” assistant coach Ken Shawcroft said.

Colyer began running two years ago as a sprinter, but soon took on the challenge of the hurdles.

“I just saw hurdles and thought they looked kind of fun,” she said. “I really wanted something that added a bit more pizzazz.”

Colyer will compete in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles at the district meet.

The West Central District track championships take place Friday and Saturday at Mt. Tahoma High in Tacoma. Events begin at 10 a.m. Kingston High athletes will also compete.
