After a difficult opening week of Class 4A Narrows play, the Wolves volleyball team responded by dominating another league opponent Tuesday night.

South Kitsap needed less than an hour to defeat Mount Tahoma 25-10, 25-11, 25-14. It marked the first time the Wolves (6-2 overall, 1-2 league) have swept an opponent since their Sept. 8 season opener against Foss.

“It was good to get a win,” said senior outside hitter Sarah Lacey, who had seven digs.

South lost in four games against both Central Kitsap and Gig Harbor last week. Those setbacks put the Wolves in a difficult position to earn a spot in the West Central District Tournament. Only the top four teams in 4A Narrows advance to districts. Entering this week, Olympia, Gig Harbor and Bellarmine Prep all were 2-0 in league play, while CK was 2-1.

Despite that, Lacey said she is not concerned about last week’s losses adversely affecting South’s playoff prospects.

“I think we’ll be OK as long as we keep playing hard,” she said. “We just have to stay positive and not get down on ourselves.”

Wolves coach Jessica Anderson said the players told her afterward that while they felt several of them had solid games, none really stood out. Junior outside hitter Toni Brown-Bell had 10 kills, five digs and five aces, while senior middle blocker Maile Keanu added six kills, three blocks and six digs.

“We probably should’ve had higher numbers of kills and higher numbers of ace serves,” Anderson said.

After playing the Thunderbirds, South’s challenge is similar to its first week of league play. The Wolves host Olympia, which has advanced to state in each of the last three seasons, on Thursday.

“It’s a completely different game,” Anderson said. “It’s so much faster. We have to move and groove like we haven’t done all season.”

South then plays Saturday at the Bearcat Invitational in Monroe.

“That is a nice one to get involved in,” Anderson said. “If you plan on going to league and districts, that tournament kind of prepares you for that mindset of playing all day.”

The Wolves then play Monday against Shelton and Tuesday at North Kitsap for their DiG PiNK match, which aims to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. While South is not hosting the event this year, Anderson said the team still will auction the jerseys they wear for the match.

The Wolves then play their regular-season home finale Wednesday against Stadium. Lacey will be one of the seniors honored that night, but she is confident her team will have plenty of matches left.

“We’re working well together this year,” she said. “I think we still have a lot to go just to get to our full potential.”
