Daily downpours aren’t slowing the 2009 King’s West golf team, which has already logged three matches despite foul weather.

With eight boys and three girls, the Warriors have nearly three times as many golfers as they did last year when the boys team was comprised of just three players and there was no girls team at all.

Coach Rick Walker said Wednesday senior Brian Pace, who qualified for districts last year, is the boys’ No. 1 golfer.

“He’s worked really, really hard to get back,” Walker said.

Newcomers John Hoyum and Jake Kenaston, both sophomores, and senior Patrick Maguire are currently the No. 2, 3 and 4 golfers, respectively.

Walker said Hoyum “should have an immediate impact” and Kenaston “is gaining more control of his game.”

“They all have what it takes to qualify for state,” Walker said, referring to the trio. “As long as they play consistently.”

Walker lost his top golfer from the 2008 team in sophomore Josh Kreifels, who elected to play baseball at Central Kitsap rather than pursue golf at KW. Kreifels qualified for state as a freshman last year.

Sam Weldin, Daving Huang, Tommy Wu and Jimmy Prehm, all newcomers, round out the boys roster.

The boys team is 2-1, having already qualified Pace, Hoyum, Maguire and Kenaston to districts.

On the girls side, Walker said he doesn’t expect to see anyone make serious postseason noise, although Hannah Fontenot has already qualified for districts.

“They are out here mostly to have fun,” he said. “They are at a level where they are focusing a lot on technique.”

Brianna Mathisen and Megan Busek round out the girls’ squad.

The team is off for spring break, resuming play April 9.
