Unusually cold temperatures and the first snowfall of the year froze the sports schedule this week.

With Central Kitsap School District closed, all games, after-school and school-related activities were cancelled yesterday and Thursday in accordance with district policy.

The wintery weather has athletic directors and coaches working to patch together the schedules while keeping athletes and parents in the know.

“Everybody wants to know when we can play,” said Nate Andrews, athletic director at Olympic High School. “It’s kind of a bummer for the kids because they are eager to play.”

Yesterday’s boys basketball game between Olympic and Bremerton was one of many games cancelled due to the weather.

The Trojan wrestling team was slated to travel to Yakima for a tournament this weekend, Andrews said, but was forced to cancel due to the weather. Next week’s schedules are unchanged, but forecasters are calling for even more snow late today and tomorrow.

Andrews, who also is Olympic’s baseball coach, said he’s used to coping with Mother Nature — rain — during the spring season, but winter schedules typically aren’t altered by weather.

“You just have to respect it,” he said. “There’s not much you can do.”

There are no girls bowling or boys swim and dive events scheduled between now and Jan. 6. Klahowya boys and girls basketball also is off until Jan. 6.

Andrews said it’s difficult to reschedule during winter break and the holidays because there simply are too many conflicts, with families making travel plans and other arrangements.
