POULSBO — Tryouts will take place 9-11 a.m. Sept. 11 at North Kitsap High School for the new 15-U West Sound Warrior baseball team.
Coaches say there will be a rigorous off-season training program, coupled with a competitive schedule of eight to 10 tournaments, the majority of which will be local.
The Warriors have teamed up with a couple of local programs so that it can offer an indoor facility on Bainbridge Island during the winter months. Off-season training will start at the beginning of November and continue through February.
Training will consist of one to two indoor practices per week. Indoor training will focus on hitting, proper mechanics, approaches at the plate, infield and outfield skills, and conditioning.
Outdoor training will include infield and outfield drills, situations, bunt coverage, pitchers’ fielding practice, on-the-field hitting, base running, etc.
All players will be encouraged to participate in a five-week throwing program beginning in January.
The coaches are three semi-pro players: Brett Whitman, a North Kitsap High School JV coach; Brandon Pedersen, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers organization in 1998; and Johnny Moe, who played professional baseball for four years in Ensenada, Mexico.
