Defending state champions blank Bainbridge 46-0

Wind, temperature more to the liking of Seahawks

When the wind speed and temperature are both in the 30s it’s a miserable day for football.

Bainbridge High School found that out Nov. 16 in the Round of 16 of the WIAA 2A state playoffs, losing at Anacortes to the Seahawks 46 to 0.

The wind deflated the Spartans from the start as the visitors went against the wind in the first quarter. Throwing and kicking into the wind proved to be almost impossible as Anacortes took a 16-0 lead with 2:34 left in the period. The Seahawks then put the game out of reach with two more scores, taking a 30-0 lead after one quarter.

Bainbridge had the wind advantage in the second quarter but could not capitalize. The only score that period came when Anacortes quarterback Brady Beaner scored on a 3-yard run to make it 37-0 at the intermission.

The BHS defense was on the field most of the time, as the offense’s incomplete passes kept stopping the clock, making the game take longer. Despite the score, the defense had some standouts. Wyatt Reed had an interception. Paxton Malloy had an impressive pass breakup and some tackles. Joseph Caron put pressure on the Anacortes quarterback and had some tackles. Others with numerous tackles were Garrett Goade, Rowan Meek and Wyndham Kocheness.

Bainbridge ended the season 8-3. The defending state champs move on to the quarterfinals.

Olympic’s season also came to a close in the Round of 16 at WF West, where the Trojans had no answers against the Bearcats in a 33-7 defeat. Riley McCoy’s three-yard rushing score with 3:51 polished off the team’s only scoring drive of the game.

The Trojans finished the year 8-3.
