SILVERDALE — Another missed opportunity.
That is how South Kitsap sophomore Adri Jackson views Tuesday night’s 0-0 tie against Central Kitsap at Silverdale Stadium in Class 4A Narrows League play.
The Wolves (3-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 league) outshot the Cougars 18-5, but routinely were denied by sophomore goalkeeper Allison Chaffee.
Perhaps the most notable were senior midfielder Miranda Caballero’s shot that hit the crossbar and ricocheted downward — but not into the goal — in the 6th minute, sophomore midfielder Hailey Parker’s attempt in the 63rd from 7 yards out that went over the crossbar and Caballero’s pass to junior forward Emily Wilkins in the 67th. Her shot was punched out by Chaffee.
“It was a great shot and she had a great save,” Cain said. “We had five or six shots that I thought were in.”
CK (1-3-2, 0-2-1) also had some opportunities and nearly won the match during the final minute. But senior forward Jessica Sanchez’s shot was saved on a dive by sophomore goalkeeper Elissa Randle.
“I thought she had a very solid game,” Cain said. “She had great hands.”
For Jackson, the match had too many similarities to South’s previous road contest, which resulted in a 1-0 loss Sept. 18 at Olympia.
“It was like Miranda Caballero told us: ‘We keep knocking, but no one is answering,’ ” Jackson said. “We need to put the ball in the back of the net.”
She thinks the Wolves might be pressing — even early in the season — because of the competitiveness of 4A Narrows. The league could have as few as three playoff berths, but Cain said she heard the seven-team 4A Narrows will end up with four district spots.
“We all wanted to score and be the difference,” said Jackson, adding that South even switched to a 3-4-3 scheme during the second half to try and accomplish that. “It was really important for us to win because we want to make it to state.”
