Wolves capture Narrows League win

Danielle Chu had 11 kills and two aces to lead South Kitsap to a 18-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22 win Tuesday night against Yelm in a Class 4A Narrows League volleyball match.Toni Brown-Bell and Hannah Spohn each added 10 kills for the Wolves (3-1 overall, 2-1 league), while Mikaela Strutz also had 34 assists.

Doubles victory propel South Kitsap to victory

South Kitsap won all three of its doubles matches to defeat Central Kitsap on Tuesday in a 4A Narrows League boys tennis match.At the No. 1 doubles position, Tyler Jackson and Matthew Lyman defeated Ian Chun and Ben Jensen 7-6, 6-4. Caleb Bray and Mason Drury then beat Daichi Fritehman and Matt Bogent 6-1, 6-1, while Shawn Lange and Isaiah Roinas defeated Ryder Hartman and Daven Quichocho 6-0, 6-0, in the Nos. 2-3 doubles matches, respectively.The Cougars’ Jason Jun won 6-3, 6-2 against Austin Wilson in the top singles’ position, but the Wolves responded at No. 2 singles where Aaron Scott defeated James Jun 6-3, 6-2.

Orioles manager hopeful Hammel can return

South Kitsap High School graduate Jason Hammel has not pitched since leaving his Sept. 11 outing with a right knee injury. But Orioles manager Buck Showalter told the Baltimore Sun he is hopeful Hammel can return before the end of the season.

“Oh, sure I’m optimistic, we just haven’t had anything where, ‘Hey, this feels pretty good, let’s start throwing yet,’ ” Showalter told the newspaper. “We haven’t gotten the discomfort out of there yet.”

In 20 starts this season, Hammel has a 8-6 record with a 3.43 ERA. His 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings is a career-best.
