He watched as the first nine South Kitsap wrestlers departed the mat with wins.

And then a feeling of dread hit Wolves’ 145-pound junior Cody Rose.

He found himself on his back against Stadium’s Dillon Armstrong and South’s opportunity for a shutout Tuesday in a Class 4A Narrows League dual match appeared in peril.

“It was a little bit of an embarrassment,” Rose said. “I wasn’t really scared or threatened by it. I wasn’t overconfident, but I trying to a little different move than I usually do.”

But Rose recovered to pin Armstrong in 56 seconds to help the Wolves to a 84-0 win.

“I came out and I went for a quick head snap and didn’t stick with it as well as I should have,” Rose said. “I switched to an armed-bar and sunk him in with that.”

It perhaps was the only suspenseful moment of the match as South concluded its 19th consecutive undefeated season in league dual matches. The Wolves now have won 184 consecutive dual league matches since their last loss in December 1992 against North Thurston.

“We definitely did what we’re supposed to do,” said South coach Chad Nass, referring to defeating Stadium. “I think that’s the only way to explain it.”

It also was their first league shutout since they won 73-0 on Jan. 14, 2010, at Mount Tahoma.

South used an unconventional preparation tactic to get there. After Saturday’s South Kitsap Invitational was canceled because of snow, Nass felt his team did not look its best during Monday’s 60-15 win versus Gig Harbor. The Wolves last competition before that was Jan. 14 at the Matman Classic at Central Kitsap.

Nass decided to have his team practice before facing Stadium.

“We just didn’t look very sharp against Gig Harbor,” he said. “We looked sloppy.

“We didn’t work them to death — we just felt the kids need to drill to get their timing back.”

South next competes in the sub-regional tournament Feb. 3-4 at Foss High School.

“We’ve got a lot of fine-tuning to do,” Nass said. “We’ve got to get our timing back and just getting back to wrestling before Mother Nature hit.”
