WRESTLING | Wolves’ trio falls in championship round

Forster loses 6-4 in overtime against Tahoma’s Sipila

AUBURN — It might have been their final visit to the old gymnasium at Auburn High School.

And that scenario is fine for several South Kitsap wrestlers.

Three Wolves advanced to the championship round with the same result — second place — during Saturday’s Auburn Invitational.

The closest to a title among the trio was junior Brandon Forster, who lost 6-4 in overtime against Tahoma’s Justin Sipila at 132 pounds. Forster, who won a 2-1 decision last year against Sipila, led 3-2 entering the third period. But Sipila took a 4-3 advantage on a takedown with 55 seconds remaining. Forster then earned an escape point with 15 seconds left to force overtime.

Forster, who lost the match on a takedown, said he plans to review video to gauge the areas he needs to improve. But he knows at least one area where he needs work.

“I was taking half-shots,” Forster said. “It’s something I’ve got to work on.”

South coach Chad Nass shared similar sentiments.

“He’s got to work on finishing his shots,” he said. “I think he got in on the legs quite a bit and didn’t finish.”

Forster, who placed eighth in Class 4A last year at 126, was not a surprise entry in the championship round. But his teammate, senior Isaiah Dains, was. Dains, a junior-varsity competitor last season, won his first two matches before suffering a 10-4 setback against Vashon’s Bruce Hoisington in the final.

“He’s a real good kid and works hard,” Nass said. “He’s starting to show himself.”

Junior Deion Anderson might have had the toughest draw in the championship round. He lost a 9-0 decision against Kentridge’s Kevin Freitag at 113. Last season, Freitag placed fourth in 4A at 106.

“Deion got in twice on his legs and couldn’t finish,” Nass said. “We’ve got to clean that up.”

The Auburn Invitational, which was held in the school’s gymnasium that is scheduled to be torn down, marks the beginning of a busy tournament schedule for the Wolves. After Thursday’s 4A Narrows League opener at Bellarmine Prep, South competes in Saturday’s Olympic Dream Duals at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. The Wolves also will participate in the Dec. 19-20 Hammerhead Tournament at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

But for now, Nass is focused on practice.

“We’ve just got a lot of work to do,” he said. “We’re young.”
