No South Kitsap High School athletic team won a state championship, but seniors Conner Hartmann (189 pounds) and Terrill Wilson (119) captured individual wrestling championships in their weight classes. Those were among the Wolves’ highlights as recounted in a review of how the school, and some of its graduates, fared during the past year.

January

• 5: South Kitsap’s girls basketball team suffers its first loss of the season, 57-35, against Bellarmine Prep. The Wolves won their first nine games of the season.

• 12: South’s boys basketball team suffers a 77-27 loss against Olympia. It marked the largest margin of defeat in coach John Callaghan’s 13 seasons as coach.

• 25: The Wolves only lost two of 14 matches en route to a 59-12 wrestling win against Central Kitsap. It marked South’s 171st consecutive Narrows League match win since 1992.

February

• 2: A pair of South seniors, Isaiah Davis and Riley Dopps, signed national letters of intent. Davis decided to play football at Eastern Washington University, while Dopps signed with Seattle Pacific’s soccer team.

• 2: Angela Romonsky scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Wolves to a 68-36 win against Central Kitsap. South had lost 15 consecutive games versus the Cougars since the rivalry resumed on an annual basis in 2001-02.

• 9: South’s girls basketball team rallied from an 18-point first-quarter deficit when senior Dana Goularte hit a shot at the buzzer to lead the Wolves to a 69-67 win against Mount Tahoma.

• 9: Boys basketball coach John Callaghan is ejected in an 84-71 loss at Mount Tahoma for the first time in his career. Athletic director Ed Santos later appealed the ejection, which resulted in a one-game suspension for the boys basketball coach, and had it overturned.

• 19: Senior Joe Rose becomes South’s first diver to win a state championship when he won the Class 4A meet with 410.75 points at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

• 19: Hartmann and Wilson capture 4A state titles at Mat Classic XXIII at the Tacoma Dome. The duo became the first Wolves since Brent Chriswell and Josiah Kipperberg in 2006 to win wrestling championships for South.

• 26: Junior Ali Davis’ 3-pointer ricocheted off the rim at the buzzer as the Wolves’ season came to an end in the second round of the 4A state tournament with a 43-40 loss against Bellarmine Prep at Puyallup High School.

March

• 18: Kelsey Callaghan, a three-year starting point guard on South’s girls basketball team, announces she will compete next season at the University of Montana Western.

April

• 11: Mark Lutzenhiser, who compiled a 52-27 record in three seasons as South’s girls basketball coach, resigns. Lutzenhiser declined to outline the reasons behind his decision beyond some known factors, such as his wife, Jeanine, was pursuing a law degree at the University of Washington. The Wolves finished with a 20-6 record in 2010-11 and reached the second round of the 4A state tournament. It marked the first time in a decade that South won 20 games in a season.

• 13: Ashley Chamberlin went 2 for 3 and Meagan Ransier hit a home run to guide the Wolves to their first softball win at Central Kitsap, 11-6, since 2005. South had lost eight consecutive meetings in the series.

• 19: South boys soccer coach James Ritchie contended that time should have expired when a handball was called on one of his players that allowed Central Kitsap’s Miles Rodriguez-Nilsen to score on a penalty kick in the waning moments of a 1-1 tie. The result helped keep the Wolves out of the playoffs.

“I’m absolutely sick,” Ritchie said at the time. “I’ve never felt quite as bad coming off a game where we’ve not lost — without a doubt.”

• 23: Isaiah Davis set a South record with a mark of 6 feet, 10 inches, in the high jump during the South Kitsap Invitational.

May

• 4: Veteran assistant Mike Hulet is tabbed as South’s new girls basketball coach. Hulet is John Callaghan’s brother-in-law.

• 10: Alex Sablan went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI to help South Kitsap’s baseball team return to state after a one-year absence with a 4-2 win against Tahoma in the 4A West Central/Southwest district baseball tournament at Russell Road in Kent.

• 20: South’s fastpitch team loses against Kentwood and Auburn Riverside to be eliminated from the 4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District Tournament despite entering it as the Narrows League’s top seed. The Wolves finished with a 17-5 record.

• 21: The Wolves committed four errors and were eliminated from the 4A state baseball playoffs in an 8-3 loss against Newport at Everett Memorial Stadium. South finished with a 13-7-1 record.

• 21: South’s 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams advanced to state at the West Central District meet at Mount Tahoma High School. Kelsie Forcier qualified for state after she finished third in the discus with a personal-best throw of 124 feet, 4 inches, and fifth in the shot put (38-10 1/4). Sarah Lacey also placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (48.77 seconds), while Ashlee Becker was seventh in the pole vault (10-03). Steve Pavlik was the Wolves’ only male competitor to move onto state after he finished fifth in the discus (143-08).

June

• 27: Seattle native and Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry is among the guests at the Detlef Schrempf Celebrity Golf Classic at McCormick Woods Golf Course. Terry averaged 18 points per game in the NBA Finals to help guide the Mavericks to their first championship against Miami.

July

• 23: Dallas native Jordan Spieth wins the 64th U.S. Junior Amateur at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex with a 6-and-5 victory against 16-year-old Chelso Barrett of Keene, N.H. It marked the second time Spieth won the event, which made him the only player other than Tiger Woods to accomplish that. Woods won the event from 1991-93.

August

• 6: Dave Villwock, a 1972 South graduate, pilots the U-96 Spirit of Qatar hull to a third-place finish at the Seafair hydroplane race. Steve David’s U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto won the event.

September

• 2: South recovered a fumble with 1:26 remaining, and junior running back Adam Gascoyne scored on a 26-yard run about a minute later to lead the Wolves to a 24-21 season-opening win at Vancouver College High School in British Columbia.

• 18: Villwock won his 10th national championship on the Unlimited Hydroplane circuit with a victory at the San Diego Bayfair.

• 27: Becca Schoales scored in the 29th minute and Rose Posadas followed with a goal in the 57th to lead the Wolves to a 2-1 win at Bellarmine Prep. It marked the third time in four seasons that South has defeated its rival on the road.

• 30: South surrendered 23 unanswered points in the final 24 minutes during a 30-20 loss at Gig Harbor. Coach D.J. Sigurdson called it one of worst setbacks of his 15-year career.

October

• 7: Junior wide receiver Devon Newquist hauls in a 41-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Eddie Meisner that pulls the Wolves within three points of second-ranked Bellarmine Prep with 10:53 left in the fourth quarter. But 14 unanswered points thwarted South’s upset bid in a 38-21 setback.

• 20: Stephanie Hamilton scored a goal in the 70th minute to guide Bellarmine Prep to a 1-0 win against South. The loss ended the Wolves’ hopes for a league title.

• 28: Gascoyne scored a touchdown on a 30-yard run and senior Aaron La Deaux had a 25-yard field goal — both in the fourth quarter — to help South beat rival Central Kitsap, 17-10, in the regular-season finale for both schools. The Wolves, who won their final three regular-season games, advanced to state for the second time in three seasons with the victory.

• 29: Junior Jessica Peterson was the Wolves’ top placer — she finished 10th in 19:25.3 — on the 5-kilometer course in the 4A Westside Classic at American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Lakewood. South’s entire girls team qualified for the state, while two boys — senior Dan Schulte and junior LaForrest Church — also qualified.

• 29: Senior Nicole Hinely finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.17) and seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:00.27) in the 4A West Central Kitsap meet at Rogers High School to qualify for the state meet in both.

November

• 4: The Wolves could not contain Edmonds-Woodway running back Desmond Young, who rushed for 278 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries, as the Warriors eliminated South, 29-19, in the first round of the 4A state playoffs at Edmonds Stadium. South finished with a 6-4 record.

• 5: Peterson was South’s top placer — she finished 25th in 19:11.2 — at the 4A state cross-country meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

• 9: South juniors Becca Schoales and Christa Lane each scored goals to lead the Wolves to a 2-0 win in the first round of the 4A state playoffs against Lake Stevens at Silverdale Stadium. Perhaps the biggest obstacle South had to overcome was a 15-minute power outage during the second half that threatened to postpone the match.

• 12: Hinely placed 10th in the 100 butterfly in 58.53 seconds at the 4A state swim and dive championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

December

• 9: Just days after his school applied for admission to the 4A South Puget Sound League, Santos said South will remain in 4A Narrows because Yelm’s enrollment spike necessitated a move up from 3A beginning in the 2012-13 school year. That gave 4A Narrows seven members after Mount Tahoma and Shelton officials announced their schools would drop to 3A Narrows.

• 13: South won eight of its first nine matches en route to a 42-24 Narrows League dual match win against Central Kitsap. That victory extended the Wolves’ dual league match win streak to 179 since their last setback in 1992.
