Frederick Trump, grandfather of presidential candidate Donald Trump, emigrated the U.S. from Germany in 1885 at the age of 16. Soon after his arrival in Seattle in 1891, he purchased a restaurant, which also offered “private rooms for ladies,” located in Seattle’s red-light district.
Bob Ulsh and Roy Carr don’t mind one whit if you call them “old geezers.” For the South Kitsap artists, being a geezer is a source of pride. The two have been part-time painters for decades. But they’ve shared a decades-long passion for creating nature and maritime scenes on canvas.
Lonnie Sharkey beamed a wide smile after his bright red 1966 Chevy II Nova completed the quarter-mile time trial in 9.68 seconds at 138 mph. “It was a good run,” said Sharkey, of Silverdale.
What we are so sorely in need of here, in our country and everywhere, is a strong sense of community building, coupled with forward thinking and economically sound governance. Bless your hearts, but where is it in this instance?
At about 4 p.m. April 25, Fabiola Sanso crossed Front Street from Hot Shots Java to meet her husband, in a parked car across the street, and was struck in the crosswalk by a VW Passat that was backing up.

I disagree with Ms. Russell’s letter arguing that the Democratic Party’s system of having super-delegates participate in nominating a presidential candidate is “not democratic” (page A4, April 15 Herald).
The pundit class was wrong then and they’re wrong now. Democrats, especially super-delegates, take note. As our nominee, Bernie Sanders will win the general election.
Last year, the Legislature passed a law mandating all kits must be sent to the state crime lab within 30 days of being collected. On April 1, one step further was taken when Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bipartisan bill that creates a system for tracking sexual assault kits. This means no more kits will sit untested on shelves, and survivors will be able to seek justice.
